I got my dog a little over a year ago and I am still trying to figure out his breed. He clearly has pit bull and sharpei in him. He was found in a parking lot in New Mexico by a family traveling from texas on their way to Lake Powell, UT. where he was then given to me. I don't really care what his breed is. He is my happy little pooch name Deohgee and I am happy with that. but the reason why I am wondering is because my girlfreind heard from someone that she used to work with that she had a freind who saw a Pit Bull/Sharpei mix at a pet store selling for $900.00!! Apparently she thought is was odd that a mutt was going for such a huge price and when asked she was told that somebody out there is breeding them that way and trying to get them AKC certified. My question is if whether or not anybody out there has ever heard of this and can you point me in the direction of who? I always thought that it would be nice to track down the original owners of him and let them know that he is O.K. and actually spoiled beyond belief with a loving couple that are really happy to have him in their lives. Thanks for any responses I get.
Also, if anybody else has such a mix, do you know if he will get any better with age about listening during distractions. This is something that my girlfriend is bothered by and wants to take him to obediance school for. He taught himself not to use the bathroom in the house since the first day that we got him and is growing increasingly intelligent. So I really dont think dog school is necessary. But if anybody out there can shed some light on these subjects it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Kelly and Chode and of course Deohgee.

Obedience classes are a must for pits and pit mixes.
I would highly recommend you and your dog go to a 6- or 8-week course of beginning obedience--it will give you the tools you need to work with your dog and have a better relationship with him. It will truly help you bond with your dog.

Listening during distractions is one of those things that will come from daily work with your dog. That doesn't depend on the type of breed or mix you own--it depends on lots of patience and work on your part.

As to the mixing of the breeds, I really hope that the breeder your girlfriend heard about stops creating these pit/pei mixes. Pit bulls are probably one of the most over-bred breeds in the U.S., and there are tons of purebred pit bulls and pit mixes that fill shelters nationwide. Not many good homes want them because of the negative stigma that comes with the breed.

iluvmypup--it's very difficult to predict how a dog of mixed ancestry will behave, so even though you have met a great pit/pei mix, it's not possible from that one encounter to make a determination on how all pit/pei mixes will act.

Hi Kelly, I haven't heard of this mix, or anyone trying to get them AKC recognized. could have also been an accidental breeding (?). I'd also be leery about that pet store, many purebred pit bulls don't even sell for that much!

Great post Rgyoung. I agree, i think obedience school is the way to go, its not that your dog needs to learn - as in to become smarter, its obvious that your guy sounds incredibly smart already, but I often say obedience is more for the owners Actually what it also does is teach us how to manage and teach our dogs consistently, it creates a stronger bond between owner & dog and strengthens his recall and other commands. Sounds like a great dog with great owners!

I agree with the above posts.Obedience scholl is a must with any pit(pure or mix).As for getting a pit/sharpei mix registered with AKC,I find that hard to believe.Sense AKC dose not reconize APBT's.
I am very glad to hear that you love you pit mix. They are truely a wonderful bred..

i rescued a pit bull/sharpei from the pound. her name is joey and she is 6 months old, but she doesn't obey at all. she is the sweetest dog, but she constantly tears up trash and my couch, and she is ruining my carpet. she knows she's bad because when i come home she runs and hides with her tail between her legs. i spank her or lock her in the bathroom, and she even does it when i'm home, i love her, but i don't know what else to do. somebody please help me!!!

Babi-- I was a bit disturbed by you saying she's "bad" There is no such thing as a "bad" dog-- I consider them, untrained, not bad though. I would recommend crating for when you are gone, nylabones and kongs for when you are there or even just to put in the crate with her. Another positive would be looking into training, or even spending one hour of what I call "School Time" when you sit there and isolate yourself from everythign and everyone and work with the dog. Sounds like your dog may have some Separation Anxiety issues which MANY dogs from rescues/shelters do becaue the majority are dogs that never had normal lives and are overwhelmed by it. I recommend the crate though. I wouldn't lock her in a separate room, I would try to pay more attention to her. Seems like she is reaching out for ANY attention even if it is bad attention by doing things she shouldn't be doing just to gain attention even if it means punishment. I would try other methods of discipline.

Hi, I also have a shar-pei, pit bull mix that was found abandoned in columbia, south carolina. I could not have asked for a better dog. He listens very well and has never been to obdience school. When he was small he was also easily distracted, but now at a year and a half he only hears me when I speak. Aside from a slight seperation anxiety he is the best dog I have ever have. This means a lot considering I grew up with golden retrievers. Good luck with the pup I'm sure he/she is the cutest as was mine.

Registering a pitbull mix!! What will they think of next?

I am sure your dog is beautiful as I think Sharpeis are gorgeous dogs and there is no way to stop people breeding pits with other breeds but trying to register them is outrageous, it's basically saying cross-breed all dogs and we'll see if we can register them!!

Unless the pet shop was pulling your leg to make more money. Give deohgee a big hug for me.

Well to clear things up if they are not already the AKC doesnt even recognize pit bulls let alone a mix. Not that they are any less of a dog, but the AKC does not recognize them. I help resuce dogs with the SPCA in my area and many of them are pits and pit puppies. It is sad that soooo many people just dont care. NEVER BUY FROM A PET STORE!!! They are not good news. You should know and be comfortable with a breeder when purchasing a dog. Or of course adopt one of the too many at the shelters. I think it is awesome that a few of you have taken on the responsibilty of a stray or shelter dog. Kudos to U! and as far as the AKC with finding the original owners they will be of no help at all. Even if u had info on the dogs parents which u dont they still could not help u....The AKC in my opinion is worthless they dont even take complaints about breeders....anyways enough complaining.... enjoy your pets!!

babi_girl972, I think you just need to try to be patient. Having a puppy (atleast till 1 yrs. old) is going to be a chore. Some dogs train earlier or easier than others but your dog isn't a "bad" dog or even more destructive than average. Your dog is simply 6 months old, end of story. I'm not saying there aren't things you can do in order to help this problem your having, but PLEASE DO NOT think your dog is a bad dog, and PLEASE whatever you do don't let yourself lose your temper. I've found that dogs almost always behave better when they have an appreciative respect for thier owners instead of a FEAR. If a dog only fears it's owner it's only going to behave good enough to not get hit, however if a dog understands punishment but also has a respect and trust for it's owner the dog will not only begin to behave better, but it will also go out of his/her way to make your happy. I've found that pit actually is more saddened when he his yelled at then when he is spanked. I don't spank anymore b/c there is no need. A spanking is to teach a lesson but with my pit there is no need, the lesson is learned by a simple raised voice saying "bad boy!!". If you ever find yourself spanking in order to relieve your own anger you need to stop, calm yourself and then rethink a better way of appropriate punishment for your dog.
Please don't think I'm making accusations of your beating your dog, I'm just giving advice to help you get better results from your dog. Good luck!

I have a Pit/Shar-pie girl..her name is Buffy and she is 10 months old. She is so beautiful and people always ask what she is ans how they can get one. Regarding her behavior, she goes through times where she is easily trainable and sometimes doesnt listen at all. Like recently she started going to to the bathroom in the house..when she hadnt had any accicents in months.
I am thinking of taking her to some obedience classes.

I have a sharpei-pit mix too and could really use some help, suggestions - she was given to me as a present when she was 8wks old - she is 7 months now. sonj is the most wonderful, loving, smart, talented dog I have EVER come in contact with!!!! and I love her dearly - the problem is - she was brought into a home where there are already several dogs (which all get along perfectly)I have to be honest and say I knew nothing about pit bulls at all and have read alot since - but nothing I can find tells me how to handle sonjii's picking fights with the other dogs.in the last month she seems to have taken on everybody(dogs) and nothing I do seems to deter her. I have used positive reinforcement with her on her"tricks"(she knows a Gob of them already!)and I have never been into "spanking" my dogs - the positive reinforcement has always worked - but I've even resorted to spanking her and putting her by herself if she growls at the other dogs, much less outright attacks them - to no avail! Help! I'm so afraid she is going to get hurt or hurt one of the other dogs!we have a big place but everybody is"part of the family" and I can't see seperating her out....
