Hi all I am looking for something to lower the ph of my water naturally water from my tap sits at about 8.5 it is also very hard so if there is anything I can put in it to lower in it would help me lots as I am buying ro water and its adding up $$$ any suggestions would be greatly appreciated Peace Fish Addict ------------------ IP: Logged |

I would say driftwood. but then I'm not positive and the comments here lately about not answering unless you're sure, have shaken my confidence! still, driftwood won't hurt your tank...I think : P IP: Logged |

Driftwood will lower pH a bit as will peat moss. However, I've never acutally used either to purposfully lower pH so I can't give you details on how much to use or any special treatment it may need. That being said, for the most part a majority of fish will do fine with a pH anywhere between 6 and 8. I know everyone (myself included) says things like "S. Am. cichlids prefer lower pH while Africans prefer higher pH", but in reality, a stable pH is more important than trying to adjust it to be 'perfect'. So unless your pH is way off, I wouldn't worry about trying to adjust it. -Chelle IP: Logged |

Hi Fish Addict, The waste that your fish give off also lowers the PH naturally, but shouldn't be used solely as a means to control PH because of the Ammonia associated with it. IP: Logged |
