my oscar past away becuse of secondary infection from ich.. he was in bad condition to start with in the pet shop(malfuntioning heater) i was wondering if a ph of 7.4 or 7.5 was to high for them to do well in? ------------------ IP: Logged |

I'm so sorry to hear that. My pH is 7.8 and my oscars are fine so I doubt that was the problem.. He probably did have some bigger problems due to the care at the LFS. -Chelle IP: Logged |

the good thing about you is that even the the fish passed away, you are caring enough to ask everyone here if the PH level was good for the oscar, which shows that you are willing to learn how to take better care of your fish. IP: Logged |

I know my water is pretty hard (no exact numbers though) and my pH is 7.8, but my oscars don't seem to mind. -Chelle IP: Logged |

Hi cidhlids small Jaws, Fish can tolerate a wide range on PH, although it may not be the ideal for them. The biggest problem is rapid PH changes. Rapid PH changes will cause them to go into shock much like if you were standing outside in 100 degree weather and jumped into a swimming pool with a water temperature of 32 degrees. While they can survive going from 8.0 PH down to a 6.0 PH, over time, they will still suffer from acidosis. It would be comparable to soaking your hand in lemon juice a few hours a day. Over time it will eat away at your skin. The difference is that they are continually in that environment. [This message has been edited by kc5gvn (edited 02-21-2004).] IP: Logged |
