The dorsal fin on the male will curve back and trail more than the female. The female's dorsal generally comes straight up. I've noticed that it is becoming harder to destinguish males from females with cichlids. The females are starting to take on more of the male characteristcs. Example: In the 70's male jewel cichlids tail coloration had 3 distinct rows of stars (blue dots) curving along the upper half of the tail while the pattern on the female went all the way around the back edge of the tail. If you look at female jewel cichlids now, they have taken on the half-way characteristic of the 70's male. With firemouths in the 70's it was easy to distinguish the dorsal fin on males and females. Now the dorsal fin on the females is starting to take on the trailing characteristic of the male firemouth. I'm thinking that this is due to inbreeding of farm raised fish. IP: Logged |
