Hi there, I bought a pregnant Mollie and she had her fry as far as I know she had 8 of them, 1 was a still born and the other, my angel ate before I removed her out of the tank. I have 6 left and I was reading that Mollie fry are one of the hardest to keep alive. I was wondering if anyone had any hints or tips on raising the fry. I have the remaining 6 fry alone in a 15 gal tank with an air rock so they have air and I feed them brine shrimp several times a day. They spend most of their time at the bottom sleeping and theyre color is lighter than it was at birth. Also, I read that the mothers can retain eggs and give birth again well she is skinny again so is there still a change of her having more in another month? If anyone can provide at least one answer it would be greatly apreciated thanks. IP: Logged |

when i had mollies , platys , and other live bearers in my 10 gallon i just let some plants float at the top so the babies could hide from the puffers and other fish and id feed them crushed fish flakes and usually a few would survive from each batch IP: Logged |

Thanks, I was just worries cause I only have 6 so if lost some I wouldn't be left with much. They are 4 days old now and they blend in with the gravel so they are hard to find, but at last count I still have them all. They are much more pale then at birth tho thyere almost white. They were orange at birth. Is that normal? And how can you tell if the mommie is going to have more when she is "skinny" again. IP: Logged |

Just buy a breeding unit. It holds the mom while shes in labor and has a part that slips in and out so that the fry fall to the bottom of the unit and are separated from the mother so she cant eat them. It can float in the tank with all the other fish so there is less hassle with removeing fish or it can stick to the side. I prefer the one that floats. There is also a breeding net, but I prefer the unit. After about 3-4 weeks the fry should be big enough to put in the tank with the adults. If you have any doubts that they are big enough to NOT be eaten just keep them in the breeding unit till you think they are. You might not catch the mother in time to put her in the unit, but thats ok. Just catch the fry you find in a net and put them in the unit or net, dont worry the net wont hurt them I have used the net with them tons of times. If you have any question about feeding them. You can get foof for the fry from your local pet store. You can also smash up some flakes in really small pieces and give them that. Some people prefer different methods. If you have any questions your local petstore will have answers, I prefer petsmart. IP: Logged |
