I have a 10 month old puppy Cavalier King Charles Spaniel called Ruby. She has been through the basic training (sit, stay, down, off etc) but we would like to start to take her to agaility training. Is she the right type of dog? How old must they be? Where should i go for this? IP: Logged |

Some trainers want the dogs to be at least 9 months old, others don't have an age. You should be careful about too much jumping, or anything else that puts stress on the bones and joints, in a growing dog. But they can begin learning the basics, which takes a long time anyway! I would look in the phone book, on the internet, ask at pet stores, etc, to find someone who teaches agility in your area. Perhaps your obedience trainer can recommend someone. Make sure whatever trainer you find uses positive methods. Attend a class just to observe before you commit to a particular trainer. As far as "the right kind of dog" - any dog can do agility! Or at least, potentially. While there are certain breeds that people usually think of as agility dogs, any dog that can learn and has fun doing it can be an agility dog. Try it and see if you both like it!

I think its great you want to do agility with your dog, and yes any dog can do it!! We started with puppy agility since our agility club doesn't allow dogs under a year to participate. Puppy agility is *GREAT* for getting them used to the obsticles and everything is set low to no so there is minimal to no impact on their joints - which is what you want to avoid. Along with the suggestions from Jamiya, call your local Kennel Club and ask if someone can recommend groups in your area. Remember to find a place that keeps it all positive (no corrections!!) and fun as this makes a huge difference! good luck! IP: Logged |
