I have a 4 month old Lab/Chow mix that we rescued from our local shelter and he is not losing all of his baby teeth! He has 8 canines right now, all baby ones and all of the adult ones are already in about half way too. There is no loseness at all in the baby canines....should I take him to the vet?

Thanks, Lisa

Hi Lisa, welcome to the forum. This isn't freakishly uncommon...but you should take him to the vet so that an infection doesn't set in, which I have been told IS common when baby teeth and adult teeth are present at the same time. They will likely pull the baby teeth, pretty minor, not a major major thing.

Thanks, Maisey. I am taking one of our older dogs in to the vet tomorrow for advice on a cancerous tumor that has gotten bigger, so I will put the pup in the car as well and see what she thinks we ought to do.

My dane didnt lose all his teeth til he was about 5 months and my chihuahua took even longer at about 7 months. Like the other person said...if both sets of teeth are in at the same time..thats when problems will happen...but if the adult teeth are just barely cutting in now..I wouldnt worry yet. You'll probably find them littering your carpet soon.

I have been keeping an eye on them for a coupleof weeks and kept waiting for the baby canines to come on out. But now the adult canines are almost as long as the baby teeth and the babys are showing no sign of losening. Got to go to the vet anyway, so we'll just take him along and see what gives.

Thanks for your input.
