Last week (01/21/02) I got 7 week old chihuahua puppy, and the day before he had just gotten his first parvo vaccine. Throughout the the rest of last week he was playful and acting normal, but it wasn't until about 2 days ago that he started acting strange...On monday morning my dad gave him a little bit too much to eat of his chicken and rice formula and he pooped a lot after that. He was normal when i got home from school, but i think he ate some of the newspaper i put in his box because it had a little bit of a vomit stain, but after that he was ok. So i figured nothing was wrong until that night he would not want to eat or even get up, he would just sleep or lay in my arms, I even called the emergency vet's office and they told me not to worry that if he doesn't poop in 23 hours to DO worry and take him to the vet. He would not poop until later that night he pooped a lot and it was greenish and watery... after that he started jumping so i didnt worry THAT much, until a little later he would just lay on his cover. I watched him as i fell asleep, and in the morning (yesterday) he started choking and then i really got freaked out! He started vomiting some dark liquid (first i thougt it was his food which is brown) but it was liquid so i started thinking it might be blood! (he vomited twice) So i took him to the vet right away and he vomitted again on the way there and a little at the vet. The vet told me those are symptoms of parvo or if not it could be sugar loss. The vet was gonna charge me 539$ to treat him! I am only 18 and a college student with a part time job, and my parents were not available, so I took him back to the pet store and the owner sent it to a vet he knows. The saddest part was when i left him there the shop owner left him in a little room and when the puppy tried to walk it would fall or walk to the side...and he was so skinny and tiny compared to his sister! I started crying! I keep calling him to see how my puppy's doing, but he just told me he was dehydrated, and his stomach wasnt good...i am supposed to call him at 7 to see what happend...I am really worried, and i am just hoping for the best, but i am pretty much expecting the worst. I am really worried and very sad even though i only had him for a week...I guess i am just writing to see if maybe there is any hope that these symptoms may not necessarily be from parvo???? I would appreciate any suggestions or opinions! Or at least some consolation. Thank You for taking your time to read my long, endless essay... Thank you.
Love, Barbie

Barbie, first I would like to say I am very sorry for you and the lil chi. When animals get sick kinda falls true with no matter what a animals comes down with be it canine or feline. Alof of the symptoms are similiar in nature. First of all I want to cover 1 subject and that being:
When is it the right time to start vacines:
Barbie, young puppies that have just left their mother have receive materntal anitibodies from their mothers milk (colostrum. If a vacine is given during this time it will neutralize the vaccine and around 30% will be protected and 100% will be exposed to the virus and this is in regard to vacine Distemper and parvo and it is not recommended on a pup 6 weeks or younger..Another words if can picture a wave of a ocean or a graph..when the wave it high or the graph is high..and you give the pup a shot its just like giving them a shot of water,,absolutely giving no protection to your pup whatsoever..this is why people wait until pup is older. Another thing especially with the chi breed..which I had chi's for 10 years..I never allowed anyone of them to receive the Leptospirosis which sometimes is in a combo shot..with a chi's weight and being around chi people. The ones that did choose to use the lep..they lost their pups..now I am not saying that is what is wrong. If your puppy is with a vet and on IV's yes this will hydrate your pup, but it takes alot of time and work to save such a lil guy. Sounds like you bought him or her from a petstore, but I must ask the question after you got him did you take him places thinking he would be protected or was it straight home. I can answer more questions for you if want.
On my schedule for distemper(MLV) would be 8 weeks, 12 weeks, 16 weeks. 2 doses 3-4 weeks apart (can have side effects if given too young under <8weeks
For Parvo it would be 8 weeks, 12 weeks, 16 weeks with 2 doses 3-4 weeks apart.
With corona most of time it will only effect dogs <6 under weeks of age
To me not giving the lepto the risk of not giving it outweighs all the benefits..
Hope this helps.....

Hi Barbie

My heart is broke reading your piece.

I took my pup Perry for his 12 week booster and the vet starting prodding and poking him and asking me all these stupid questions. He had a frown on his face and started "himming and hawing" and only half finishing sentences like "there seems to be a slight problem with..... " etc etc. All the time, Perry, a golden cocker spaniel, sat there looking up at me with these sad brown eyes, he never moved and didnt shy away from the vet.

Turns out his "testicles hadnt dropped yet, and that it was only a matter of time", followed by a frown and a big sigh.

See, the vet had confused me with someone who could mindread and didnt bother telling me that they would drop in a few weeks or so, that Perry was still young. I left the vets office in tears, went home to my boyfriend in floods of tears and told him that there was something wrong with him and it was only a matter of time. My boyfriend explained to me what the vet really meant and I was okay after that. I never went to that vet again.

What Im saying is that I understand what you are feeling, my fear was shortlived but the pain of losing him nearly cut me in two. Theres nothing you can do for him, let the vets do their job with the pup and be there waiting for him when he gets well.

Well, like i had mentioned eralier,I ended up taking my puppy back to the pet store and the owner took him to a vet he knows, but i told him what the vet told ME, and he said "it's probably something he ate"...but about two days later after i kept calling him to see how my puppy was doing...first he said he was uner IV and that he seemed better, but on thursday my boyfriend called me to tell me the saddest news, my puppy died But i have a feeling they might have put him to sleep because he probably did have parvo. The pet shop owner promised to give us another puppy, but i wont be able to have another puppy in a long time if my puppy actually did have parvo. I miss my PeEwEe

Hi Barbie,

Im so sorry for your loss, hoping you feel better soon. You will see your puppy again in heaven. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats there waiting for me =)

When you do decide it is time to get another dog, please try a professional breeder. Pet stores are not really a good place to get a pet from. There is no pedigree or background info on the pets parents or bloodlines.

Take the time to research the breeders. Some are just as bad a a petstore and sell for profit only. They are not interested to see that their pups get placed in good loving homes, they just want the money. Just like a petstore.
Good breeders will not hide ANYTHING from you. Good breeders will help you out with any problems with your pup, be it health, training or temperment.

Warmest regards,

Russ

barbie-i've been watching the board to see the outcome of your situation. i'm so saddened to hear about your loss. i lost a puppy some years ago after only having her a week due to an overdosage of whatever they give puppies for shots. at least thats what they told me, they actually put her down and i was devastated.

when your ready, follow the advice of getting your next puppy from a good breeder.

again, my sympathies.

Barbie just let me tell you that if you have a suspecion on parvo DO NOT bring in another puppy unless is has been fully vaccinated. Parvo can stay around for 7 years. Also a good idea before getting another puppy would be to make sure you have bleached everything down. Use a mixture of 1 part bleach to 32 parts water. And like I said make sure you have everything bleached completly down. In fact we are treating one here in our house for what we think is parvo because the vet we went to said it wasn't but is exactly like the syptoms of parvo. Treating a puppy of parvo does in fact require that they get fluids injected into them and they remain sterlized and are given antibiodics for at least 3-4 day. Was there any blood in his stool? And did his vomit ever turn to clear liquid with foam in it? I am sorry for you lose and you are not alone. We have lost two puppies in the last week. These two were litter mates of the one we are treating now. And because a vet diagnosed them wrong they did not get a chance to live. So we give you are deepest sympathys and hope you cheer up soon.

Barbie I am so sorry for your loss Sounds to me like you might be right and maybe the pup never went to a vet..I would ask the owner the name of vet so called friend he took it too, if he won't tell you I would ask for your money back and buy from a reputable breeder. This story has made me just sick thinking bout what the owner really did with the pup and the truth, and when you first posted only thing that went thru my mind is this pet store owner just put pup maybe in backroom to whither away...
I hope you keep us informed..

Hi Barbie,
I have just joined this forum and have read about your loss. Please accept my heartfelt sympathies. I am currently dealing with my beloved dog having any number of ailments and even though it is costing me a small fortune, I know that if she doesn't get better I will be devastated. You will always get some people who don't understand ,who will say "It's just a dog". These people obviously have not experienced the joy and richness an animal can bring to your life.
Chin up, we are all thinking of you.

Yours
Sarah_f

The Vet called late last night and said that our Cloie had passed my daughter is heartbroken I am determined to get her a healthy dog but now I need to be sure it has been vacinated for Parvo before I can bring it here I know that bleach water kills the virus but I can't use it everywhere that Cloie was like when she was curled up on my daughters stuffed animals just a couple of days before we saw she was sick Parvo is such a cruel virus thank you to every one who prayed for us.
