okay i need help...i have a pomeranian thats about 4 months old. We are crate training her and have adjusted the crate to her size. our vet told us to make it a size where she just has enough room to lay down. of course she would occasionally pee in it becuase she is small, but now everytime we put her n there she always poops in her
crate..everytime! i dunno what to do?? please help?? also, i think she's just discovered her bark, because all she does is bark, and at absolutely nothing. is it just the age?? please help me!!
Thanks, Mallory

Hi Mallory, In my opinion...I don't htink crates are good... I think it is kind of sad to keep a animal in such a small place...But alot of people do it so here is my advice as to why she might be doing these things, =)
1.) She could be scared (nervous) and pooping and barking could be her way of showing it.
2.) She just needs time to adjust to her new enviorment.
3.) She is a puppy, and puppies bark and have accidents.
I hope all goes well! =)

Hi, I honestly think crates are great IF used appropriatetly. Theyre sort of like a den, and if u crate train ur dog right and dont use it as a form of punishment they will love it.

I think the crate may possibly be too large. If she is pooping in the crate and still has enough room to lay in a corner away from the poop then it is too big. You should take her outside before and immediatly after she is taken out of her crate.

Also, if she is doing this, do not feed her in the crate. Hope this helps

I made the crate as small as possible, i thought that it was the perfect size for her. We take her out all the time..before she goes in the crate and right when she come out. She doesnt get fed in the crate, she has specific feeding times. im just not undertanding why she's doing this...

I must agree with ilovemypets!

Everybody has their own opinion on crate usage, and here is mine:

I don't think they are bad (if used properly), but I just don't like confining a dog into such a small cramped space.

I rarely crated my two pups. I put them in their crate once in a while for short periods of time just so they would become accustomed to it in case they ever needed to be put in one. Whenever I left, I would leave them in the kitchen (which was gated off from the rest of the house) and left their cage, with the door open, so they could go in if they wanted to. They VERY RARELY had accidents when I left them in the kitchen, and they were both housebroken very quickly. So, just for the record, you don't need to use a crate in order to housebreak your pup!

In my honest opinion, I think puppy proofing a laundry room or kitchen and leaving a pup in there while you are gone is a much nicer option. Obviously you would want to leave the crate in the room so they can go in it if they so desire. (Laundry rooms and kitchens are ideal b/c most are tiled and therefore accidents are easy to clean up)

As far as barking is concerned, dogs actually find barking to be enjoyable and that is why most dogs bark. If you are bothered by your dogs' barking, the best suggestion I can give you is to COMPLETELY ignore her. Going up to a dog and telling him/her to be quiet or yelling at him/her is actually reinforcing the behavior. There really isn't a miracle solution for it.

Hope things get better for ya'!

My pom is 4 mo. stays in crate at night, and she crys to go if she has to,I keep an eye on her while I'm home, and if I see she needs to go I take her to paper, and say good girl peepee, I say the same thing when I take her out and she goes, I also take a treat out and give her part of it and as soon as shes done all her business, I put her in and give her the rest. she knows if she goes outside she gets treat. and since I work I can't keep her in crate all day, I suggest taking her out before bed,& middle of night until she can hold it longer.
