Hi,

I have two pom puppies just over 4 months.

Both vibrant, healthy, beautiful.

One is about 5 lbs, the other about 2 lbs. The smaller one, we've noticed, has thinning hair behind his ears and on his chest.

Is this the normal loss of his puppy coat?

He seems too young for the pomeranian black skin/hair loss condition, and there is no dark skin, and it isn't starting on his hind legs as this condition normally starts.

Has anyone had a pomeranian puppy go through hair thinning at 4 months?

Could this be a vaccine reaction, he had his third parvo/distempter/etc. shot about 1-2 wks ago (can't recall exactly which day)?

Any thoughts?

I have heard that smaller dogs (dogs that are smaller for their breed) do have coat problems, this may be associated with that. I am not sure the normal size for poms at 4 mo, mine was 5 months when I got her. I have noticed that hair on my smaller pom, around her ears is alot thinner than the rest now that you mentioned that. But her chest is normal. Anyway good luck with your little boy and hope someone with some better answers comes along.

I guess his hair was always a little thinner than the bigger pom, on his chest i can see the pink of his skin, whereas the rest of his body is so thick i can't.

his chest reminds me more of a maltese look, where the hair is long and waves one way or the other and doesn't have the thick undercoat, so that's why i can see the pink of his skin.

i honestly don't remember if it was always that way, or is just more noticeable now that he's bigger (2 lbs) vs 15 oz when I got him.

thank again.

I read on the internet that about 4-6 mo. a pom pup will blow its puppy coat and will begin getting adult hair, I hope so because mine is 4 mo and she now an ugly duckling!
