Julia: Here is the pet insurance site. www.petcareinsurance.com I have the gold version and it pays for itself so far. you pay the vet and get reimburst in about a month. They pay for meds too. I got it just in time. Sasha has been diagnosted with degenerative arthritis and had I waited they would not have payed for anything to do with that because it was pre-exsisting. I am really glad I did. I am at the vet once a month with her getting meds and a shot of glucosamine. I don't like thinking about it all. But it is worth it. Even the lower costing one. I initially got it because Sasha would not listen to me and I was afraid she would run in the street and get hit by a car or something aweful would happen.

Luvpup: generally adult food is given after they turn 1 year old. Purina puppy chow is supposed to be pretty far down on the totem pole of prefered foods for the dogs. When you change his food do some research on some of the premuim foods. They really do make a difference. flint river, Wellness, Innova are some of the premium foods. You feed less becuase they have much higher quality of ingrediants. My poodle only eats about 1/4 of a cup of kibble (innova). If she eats more than that she gets fat. She thinks she needs more so I give her veggies also. Vet says for me to keep doing what I am doing. She likes to pig out, but its not good for a dog with arthritis.

Sometimes I think that they are paid to say what someone should buy. They really do know that there is better food out there.

Puttin,

Regarding vets recommending food..

When I took my maltepoo in for his last shots several months ago, I discussed changing his food from Science Diet to something better. My vet actually recommended he stay on the SD or Purina Pro Plam or Iams. He said they do the most research and that's what's important to him. He also said there was nothing wrong with corn.

Today, Baxter had his 6 month checkup and his regular vet was on vacation, so there was another vet there to see him. When my husband mentioned we were switching over to Innova, she had never even heard of it!

Hmmm...Makes you wonder....

By the way, his vet is really great and came highly recommended, he just has different opinions on food.

We have Iams for our cats I think. For our yorkie and maltese we have fostersmithfood. I think puppy chow is fine....thats what i've heard. There is alot of corn in these products...but hey, we've had cat that lived long time with many different products! so I think both are great!

vets do have different opinions on food.there's so many choices out there it's hard to decide what's best.i mean there are alot of good choices and vets probably do get paid to say a certian brand is good. when my vet recommended puppy chow he gave me a free bag of it.i'm gonna list the ingredients to see what everyone thinks.

purina puppy chow(new formula)

I know that corn being the first ingrediant mean that is one of the main ingrediants, meaning way to mcuh filler. Corn on itself is very fattening too.And the chicken by product meal means that they could have put in any part of the chicken (feet, beaks) all that bad stuff. When ever it says by-product it more than likeley means everything but the meat. You might get lucky and have them throw a little in it. The first four ingrediant should be meat and grains then other great things. I just happen to have bought new bag of Innova. Let me list the ingrediants.
Innova ingrediants:
Turkey, chicken, chicken meal, barley, brown rice, potatoes, rice(probably white) chicken fat,(preserved with mixed tocopherols),herring, apples, carrots, cottage cheese, sunflower oil, Dicalcium phosphate, alfalpha sprouts, eggs, garlic, sodium Ascorbate, di-Alpha tocopherol, freeze dried enteroccus faecium fermentation product, freeze dried lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product, freezedried lactobacillus casei fermentation product, freeze dried lactobacillus planarum fermentation product, potassium chloride, choline chloride, calcium carbonate, zinc proteinate, iron proteinate, beta carotene, niacin, calcium pantothenate, copper proteinate, manganous proteinate, thiamine mononitrate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin, vitamn D3 supplement, vitamin B12 supplement, folic acid, calcium iodate biotin.
Here is a site that sells it. www.naturapet.com though I would never buy dog food online. Its way too expensive that way. They use no bi-products. Remember the bi-products are what is thrown out that humans don't generally use at least here in america we don't.
