Thanks!! Shes my baby! She is a Shih/ToyPoo. I have never seen her parents. I wish I could have seen who was what. I have no trick to get rid of tear stains. She really doesnt have them. She gets "eye gook" in the corners of her eyes, and I just pull them out with warm water. It may be something that your dog is eating. I saw his pic on the other board. Or maybe its just the chemicals in his body. I have, however, seen Maltese babies with dark tear stains like yours. Have you tried the Show Eye pads? I dont think Shiztus or Toy Poodles get tear stains...I could be wrong though...

She is a great dog. I would love to get another Shih-Poo. It gets very expensive though. Has anyone ever heard of Dog Insurance?

She is amazing, much better up close than the teenie tiny teenie picture you first had. She definatley has the shitzy mouth. My poodle has a crooked underbite too. I have pet insurance for my poodle Sasha. It is a good idea to get it before anything starts happening healthwise or its not covered, You know like an ongoing sickness. Let me know if you want to know the sight. They have different packages.
Luvpets: The stains could be from an allery. Even if you are giving him a good food, that food could still have something in it that he is allergic too. So like I had to do was keep trying different foods until you find the right one. Just because it is recommendable does not mean its perfect for your dog.Poodles can and do get staining. I have seen poodles that even get stains from licking the forearm of their legs or feet. It was the same pinkish tinge as on your dog. So I am not saying your food choice is bad (though I have not heard anyone recommend it also in my searchings)but it may just be wrong for your little one.He could be allergic to chicken, lamb, turkey. You just need to do the process of elimination. Most people have to change foods until they find what suites their dog. Please don't be offended. This is just my experience.

I would love to know the site of the Dog Insurance...I have seen some expensive and some cheap ones out there. I currently use Care Credit with my Vet office.
www.carecredit.com
but that is even expensive...what do you suggest?

Hi Everyone
Just some FYI....
I have an 8 mo. old Pekapoo and he is white and had the worst eye "rust" stains. I bought this stuff called Tear Clear (I think) at the pet store, its in a white bottle, red cap, and it works! It is a clear water like liquid and I apply it when I give Joee a bath with a toothbrush. All I do is saturate the toothbrush with the stuff and brush it below his eye where the stains (were!) and rinse it off when I rinse the rest of his body. I only apply this stuff when I give him a bath, which is once a week, and it is gone!!!! It took about maybe three weeks before it really started disappearing that is because I only do it once at bath time. I pretty much do it now for preventative maintenance. I know others who have applied it two times a day or so and it took less time to disappear but I just didn't have the time to do that. But it works like magic! Please give it a try.

I was also told by my vet that a lot of that staining is hereditary to the toy dog breed. I had a toy poodle growing up and it had the same thing. GOOD LUCK to anyone who needs to rid of this stuff!!

Julia: Here is the pet insurance site. www.petcareinsurance.com I have the gold version and it pays for itself so far. you pay the vet and get reimburst in about a month. They pay for meds too. I got it just in time. Sasha has been diagnosted with degenerative arthritis and had I waited they would not have payed for anything to do with that because it was pre-exsisting. I am really glad I did. I am at the vet once a month with her getting meds and a shot of glucosamine. I don't like thinking about it all. But it is worth it. Even the lower costing one. I initially got it because Sasha would not listen to me and I was afraid she would run in the street and get hit by a car or something aweful would happen.

Luvpup: generally adult food is given after they turn 1 year old. Purina puppy chow is supposed to be pretty far down on the totem pole of prefered foods for the dogs. When you change his food do some research on some of the premuim foods. They really do make a difference. flint river, Wellness, Innova are some of the premium foods. You feed less becuase they have much higher quality of ingrediants. My poodle only eats about 1/4 of a cup of kibble (innova). If she eats more than that she gets fat. She thinks she needs more so I give her veggies also. Vet says for me to keep doing what I am doing. She likes to pig out, but its not good for a dog with arthritis.

Sometimes I think that they are paid to say what someone should buy. They really do know that there is better food out there.

Puttin,

Regarding vets recommending food..

When I took my maltepoo in for his last shots several months ago, I discussed changing his food from Science Diet to something better. My vet actually recommended he stay on the SD or Purina Pro Plam or Iams. He said they do the most research and that's what's important to him. He also said there was nothing wrong with corn.

Today, Baxter had his 6 month checkup and his regular vet was on vacation, so there was another vet there to see him. When my husband mentioned we were switching over to Innova, she had never even heard of it!

Hmmm...Makes you wonder....

By the way, his vet is really great and came highly recommended, he just has different opinions on food.

We have Iams for our cats I think. For our yorkie and maltese we have fostersmithfood. I think puppy chow is fine....thats what i've heard. There is alot of corn in these products...but hey, we've had cat that lived long time with many different products! so I think both are great!

vets do have different opinions on food.there's so many choices out there it's hard to decide what's best.i mean there are alot of good choices and vets probably do get paid to say a certian brand is good. when my vet recommended puppy chow he gave me a free bag of it.i'm gonna list the ingredients to see what everyone thinks.

purina puppy chow(new formula)

ground yellow corn,chicken by-product meal,corn gluten meal,brewers rice,soybean meal,beef tallow preserved with mixed-tocopherols(source of vitamin e),pearled barley,animal digest,dicalcium phosphate,calcium carbonate,salt,egg product,potassium chloride,l-lysine monohydrochloride,choline chloride,dl-methionine,zinc sulfate,ferrous sulfate ,vitamin supplements(e,a,b-12,d-3),maganese sulfate,niacin,brewers dried yeast,calcium pantothenate,garlic oil,pyridoxine hydrochloride,copper sulfate,thiamine mononitrate,riboflavin supplement,calcium iodate,menadione sodium bisulfite complex(source of vitamin k activity),folic acid,biotin,sodium selinite.

I know that corn being the first ingrediant mean that is one of the main ingrediants, meaning way to mcuh filler. Corn on itself is very fattening too.And the chicken by product meal means that they could have put in any part of the chicken (feet, beaks) all that bad stuff. When ever it says by-product it more than likeley means everything but the meat. You might get lucky and have them throw a little in it. The first four ingrediant should be meat and grains then other great things. I just happen to have bought new bag of Innova. Let me list the ingrediants.
Innova ingrediants:
Turkey, chicken, chicken meal, barley, brown rice, potatoes, rice(probably white) chicken fat,(preserved with mixed tocopherols),herring, apples, carrots, cottage cheese, sunflower oil, Dicalcium phosphate, alfalpha sprouts, eggs, garlic, sodium Ascorbate, di-Alpha tocopherol, freeze dried enteroccus faecium fermentation product, freeze dried lactobacillus acidophilus fermentation product, freezedried lactobacillus casei fermentation product, freeze dried lactobacillus planarum fermentation product, potassium chloride, choline chloride, calcium carbonate, zinc proteinate, iron proteinate, beta carotene, niacin, calcium pantothenate, copper proteinate, manganous proteinate, thiamine mononitrate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin, vitamn D3 supplement, vitamin B12 supplement, folic acid, calcium iodate biotin.
Here is a site that sells it. www.naturapet.com though I would never buy dog food online. Its way too expensive that way. They use no bi-products. Remember the bi-products are what is thrown out that humans don't generally use at least here in america we don't.

Many vets seem to recommend foods that are manufactured by large companies that do lots of research. Some of them admitedly don't have a clue about ingredients...they simply "trust" that the large companies that do research make the best foods. How do I know this? I was curious so I asked several of them. I don't beleive for a second that they get "kickbacks" to recommend certain brands. If they sell food in their office then yes Im sure they make some money off it...but its really no different than any other product/medication they sell...they make money off those products too.
Im not trying to be argumentative (so I hope no one takes it that way)...I just wanted to share my opinion on the matter.

When I told my vet I was feeding Innova she said "Innova is an excellent food." I guess food opinions/recommendations can vary just as much from vet to vet as they can from owner to owner.

Everyone is free to say what they want. Within reason of course, right. I want everyone to know what the possiblities are. Let the newbie dog owners know their options. I can't say they take kickbacks but they sureley do seem bent on certain brands and there is better that they could be selling. Maybe they are settling at midrange or something like that.Just as the reason that I don't buy my flea products from our vet. I can twice the amount else where. its good to have you here Nern. Isn't Julia's fluffball a cutie.
