A week ago, my cat injured her leg when she fell off of our radiator. She was limping around sometimes and other times hopping on three legs. I gave it a few days to heal and it didn't, so I took her to the vet on Tuesday this week. They gave her an anti-inflammatory shot and also gave her the feline booster and rabies shots for this year since she was due. They also gave me some Cosequin capsules to sprinkle over her soft food. As soon as I brought the cat home, her name is Nevie (pronounced with a long e), she was able to walk on her leg again with very little limping. She was eating just fine. She is the little piglet of my two cats, she'll usually eat anything! She ate fine for Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday, she wouldn't eat her food anymore. We did notice that she had thrown up a hair ball and some other liquid multiple places around the house and I thought this would pass. But, it's now Saturday and she is still not eating her food- soft or dry. I even tried a different flavor of soft food, but that didn't help. I tried feeding her some cat treats and she seems to eat a couple of those with no problem. I also gave her a couple tiny bites of ham (lunchmeat) and she ate that fine. I don't want to continue feeding her lunch meat and cat treats because they are not healthy for her. Also, she is acting more tired than usual. And she is disinterested in eating... she used to wake me up at 6am everyday so I'd feed her and now she doesn't seem to care. This is very confusing behavior because she will eat some things, but I don't understand why she went from eating tons of soft cat food that she loves one day to not even licking it the next. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I wonder if she's having a reaction to the meds. I wouldn't let her go to long without eating as cats will have dire consequences from going without food for too long. Try some tuna juice or chicken baby food (try to get some without onions) to jump start her appetite. But don't wait too long before asking the vet about her lack of appetite.

Thank you very much for your suggestions... I will try that and may take her to an emergency room vet tomorrow if I don't have any luck.

You can always give her some nutrical or another vitamin paste. Cats can develop liver problems from going 3-5 days without eating.

I took the cat to an ER vet last night. They gave her some subcutaneous fluids and tried to force feed her some food and laxatone. The cat threw everything up. If she doesn't eat by this afternoon, which it is not looking promising, I am supposed to bring her back to be admitted. They suggested possibly doing an ultrasound or exploratory surgery. Does anyone know anything about these procedures in cats?

Hello. I'm sorry she's not feeling well. Have they done any blood/urine work on her? You would think this would be step one before doing any kind of surgery. Also, what kind of surgery (where specifically) were they thinking of doing on her?

They have not yet done any blood or urine tests. The surgery they are considering is exploratory abdominal surgery in which they look at all organs in the abdominal cavity and do any repairs or take biopsies if necessary. The surgery is expected to cost more than $1000 and I'm am disappointed that I failed to get pet insurance for her. She's only 6 years old and I thought she wouldn't start having any problems yet.

Good news though! I am holding off on this procedure for a couple of days at least. Nevie ate a tiny bit of both soft and dry food today. I'm hoping she can keep everything down and will digest the food normally.

I would get a second opinion. I think it's very odd that they didn't do any blood or urine work and they want to jump right into surgery. If it was my kitty I wouldn't go this route. I believe in doing things step by step and ruling things out. Then once a diagnosis has been reached then and only then would I have my kitty go through surgery if it was necessary.

Any surgery involves risks and is invasive. It should only be done (in my opinion) to treat a specific problem. As for exploritive surgery it should only be considered once everything else has been ruled out either by blood/urine work, ultrasound/x-rays.

cat not eating = go to a vet!

can't help but stress this enough.... we can give as many opinions about what's going wrong, but unless you take your cat to a qualified vet who can examine her there and then, all we'll be doing here is guessing what's going wrong with her.... and that cannot be too good.
