For almost two months we couldn't get our parakeet, Mambo to come out of his cage on his own. We would clip his door open for hours but he wouldn't venture out.

All of this changed about a week ago when we bought him this perch that hangs on the outside of his cage. I think it gave him a half-way point between the safety of his cage and the big outside world. Now he spends most of his day on what we call his "Front Porch." He really loves it -- he'll take a few flights around the house, then go back to his front porch.

In case anyone else was having a similar problem, here's what the perch looks like:

The perch was designed to go inside the cage, I guess -- but it hangs on the outside just as well.

We got it at Petco -- it was about $6 and near the other perches they sell (like the tree limbs that fasten on to the cage, cement perches, etc.)

It's made all the difference to our little buddy. We now leave his door open basically as long as someone is home.

Thanks for that info. I'm going to take a ride to Petco this week and check them out. I haven't been able to get my little guy out of his cage either.... although I've only had him for less than a month, that perch may just do the trick!
