Yesterday I stopped by a nearby pet store and saw a cockatiel in a cage. The bird obviously was sick. As I approched the room it was in (alone), I could clearly see it shaking from 3 feet away. I touched the cage and it squawked at me so painfully hoarse that I felt sorry for it. Every time I touched the cage to offer some comfort it squawked so I stopped and mentioned it to the clerk. Apparently, the shop clerks allowed people to approach the bird to the point that its' squawking was reduced to a hoarse whisper. My heart went out to it. It was being sold for $69. Now, I know nothing about cockatiels or parrots but I can reconize a sick bird and behavior problems when I see them. I have been thinking hard all weekend about going back there and rescuing it. What should I do? Any suggestions? I could really use some feedback. Tanya

I just read your story. I hope you went back and bought the bird. I encountered the same thing, and I immediately bought the bird. He can't fly and only has half a beak, but he is the best singer of all my tiels. When he tries to fly, I pick him up and put him back on top of his cage. I know he is happy, and I love him. I wish I could help him fly. I think he was born this way. By the way, his name is Eagle.

Maybe complain to the manager, not just the salesclerk. If there is an owner of the shop around, even better, you could call animal control & ask advice. Good Luck

I am happy to say that I went back to the pet store two days after I saw the sick bird and it was already sold to someone as concerned as I was.
