I built one of my 10 gallons following the instructions outlined here: http://saltaquarium.about.com/cs/aquariumdiy/a/aa120897diyaq.htm It really wasn't that difficult, but unless your making a 100+ gallon tank, it really isn't going to save you any money to build it yourself (I just built the 10 gallon to see if I could do it). -Chelle IP: Logged |

Chelle- I've always wanted to build my own tank also just to see if I could. Did it take very long for you to do it? And how hard was it? I'm not very handy with tools and what not but I'd like to try. Any advice? Thanks. IP: Logged |

It only took me a few days to build mine and most of that time was letting the silicone dry. I tried cutting the glass myself, but it's a lot harder than it sounds so I ended up just going to Lowes and having them cut it for me (cost about $25 for the glass & cutting). To actually assemble the glass and seal it, it took about half an hour. I made my own top & bottom frames out of wood which took another hour or so. I also decided to add wood trim on the corners because this was my first attempt at trying so smooth silicone and it was a little messy. The wood trim hides it pretty well. After the silicone on the glass had cured for 24 hours, I used more silicone to attach all the wood trim and let that cure for another 24 hours. Then I filled it with water and let it set for another 4 hours to make sure it didn't leak. It's been set up since October and hasn't leaked any yet. Pics: With trim. -Chelle [This message has been edited by t_chelle16 (edited 02-24-2004).] IP: Logged |

Wow! That looks great, I'm definitely going to try! I'm but a poor college student so I'll have to wait for Uncle Sam to send me my tax return first though. Thanks for the info. IP: Logged |

quote: You're going to need to do some research on thickness of glass. IIRC, normally you can get by with 1/4" glass, but if the tank is taller than 24", you need to go thicker. -Chelle IP: Logged |

Pretty nice tank! My cousin using ceramics for goldfishs.According to him, goldfish need be under the sun.To make a shade for the fish (37' degree in Malaysia), he used two ceramics and 3 glasses.Turned out like a comfortable half shady tank for the goldfish. Can the bloody parrot lives under the sun? I have plan to put them in a big terracota pot with some lively plant.Any suggestion?? [This message has been edited by little cheri (edited 02-25-2004).] IP: Logged |
