I have a Siberian husky that is about 75 lbs and thinks he is a goat or a trash hound. His latest adventure was eating 6 to 10 shrimp wrapped in bacon with tooth picks skewering the shrimp and bacon. The toothpicks are flathead. I called the emergency vet clinic here and was laughed at. I know as a nurse what complications to look for and know not to induce vomiting. The clinic told me to give the dog 2 tbs of Metamucil twice a day. I was just wondering how long it will take for the tooth picks to pass. Please help!

My 8 month old pup swallowed a toothpick whole a couple weeks ago and I was quite hysterical. My vet teased me as well. He said not to worry about it just keep an eye on him. I did worry and I checked his stools for three days waiting for it to pass...I never found it. But he is fine. My vet told me if it had been a bigger chunk of wood he might be worried. If you think about it...dogs often chew on wood or bones that splinter and don't seem to have problems. I would just do what your vet said...and try not to worry too much.

I am sure your Husky will be just fine...they have strong stomachs! I have two Huskies that are constantly into everything. I had one that I caught with a bird and when I told her to drop it she swallowed it whole!!! Oh I had a meltdown calling the vet and wondering if she would be ok. She was...no problems at all! I was wondering, how is your Husky 75lbs? They are a medium breed supposing to max out about 60 lbs at the most. Wow. What a big handful for you!!!

I'm not a vet by any means, but from experience I would encourage you not to worry. My puppy is CONSTANTLY eating small pieces of wood (see my post about a week back). He must eat the equivalent to 6 toothpicks probabloy every day and he only weighs 18lbs. So far we haven't had any problems. (besides the grey hairs Maisey warned me about hehe)

This is a true story. A few years ago my dog was showing signs of back problems. He came in from his morning walk kind if whimpering. Since he was having problems walking they automatically thought it was his back. After a few weeks on meds I noticed his hair sticking up on his side. He had a red bump that was very sore. They did surgery and pulled out a large sandwich tooth pick!! That dog raided the trash. He was very lucky that he was not poisoned by his own intestines when it passed thru.
I still have the tooth pick!!
