I have a teacup chihuahua and while I'm not worried about him impregnating anyone at the park...I am looking for a way to stop the incessant humping that just started. I dont have a problem with him marking in the house....when hes at the park he marks everything in sight now. Thats not really bothering me...hes a boy...they do that. But would a belly band stop the humping? He isnt really doing anything but embarrassing me really so its not a crucial issue...he just runs around..."hanging out" and trying to hump ankles for a good portion of the trip to the park. On a slightly different topic....do little dogs really have to go to the bathroom more often than larger dogs? I can let him out once an hour and he will go. I havent caught him recently going inside the house...he does have a litter box...but it just seems like he has to go all the time. Its not a problem now...but next year we will be moving to the midwest where it gets well below freezing and a small dog like that...I'm worried about keeping him warm and ideally..the less trips outside...the better. Any thoughts from teacup pup owners? And unfixed boy dogs? I assume I'll have him fixed within a year. He was sold to me on the condition that i would let him breed once or twice to one of the breeders dogs plus I'm worried about his size and getting him fixed...or I was worried when he was 6 months old and not even a pound. I think if he is going outside and standing there urinating in one spot like he really needed to go then thats what it is. If he is just adding a little sprinkle to each thing he pees on, he is just marking the area. Mine will do that. But if he really has to go he will stand there and let it all out. Not sure about the humping thing. I know neutering should help. Though maybe not entirerly. Some dogs will do this to show dominance, male or female. Good luck. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I don't think a belly band would prevent him from humping. I also don't think that small dogs have to go to the bathroom any more often than larger dogs. Small dogs have smaller bladders but they also have smaller moisture requirements so they should be able to hold it just as long as a larger dog. I have a small dog and a medium dog that both go outside about 3 - 4 times a day. IP: Logged |

He must be just marking constantly. He lifts his leg at the park but not at home. He always seems ready to go out to go potty and its not like i give him treats every time he goes so he isnt trying to trick me out of treats or anything...it just seems like he goes all the freakin time! I wonder if i simply didnt let him out as much...if he would hold it or just start using his box hrmm... Guess I'll just have to train the humping out of him. How difficult is this because obviously if they smell something itneresting...they want to hump. To me it seems like id be teaching a dog not to eat a chunk of hamburger sitting on the floor =P (i.e. near impossible) IP: Logged |

How old is he? Bailey went through a SERIOUS FRIENDLY phase before he was neutered. That was about 4-5 months old... it was pretty frequently too! those poor stuffed animals .... But after he was neutered at 6 months, it pretty much stopped. He still did it at first (must have still been in his brain!! hehe) and every blue moon when the wind blows right he does it.... but it's very very rare. So, unfortunately, I guess I'm of no help cuz the only suggestion I would have would be to have him neutered. IP: Logged |

Mistress, is he fixed? if not that might be part of the problem, i canalmost garuntee you that a belly band isnt going to do anything for you as far as mounting goes, unless you start to get worried about him impregenating another bitch. also it wont stop him from marking while outside so it'll be a mess to clean up. Unless your a breeder and you plan on carrying on his good qualities and lines, give him heck when he mounts another dog. When all else fails, use a leash. And if your worried about him not getting a good run then buy a "flex-lead" you can get them up to 10 meters long and there fully retracable, its like a tape measure, that what i use on my boys who are a nusisince to other dogs. Over time and with constant reinforcement he will learn that being NOT being a pest to others will get him free time. let me know if you need more help or if that works. CLAIRE IP: Logged |

Monkey is 10 months old now...or 9 months (stops to count...) ok 9. He JUST started lifting legs, humping, and marking territory like a week ago. He never humps the girl dog I have at home or toys or anything else. He does a funny humpy thing when he pees (i posted about that once before) but no he is not fixed yet. He does NOT take to training well at all which is why i was asking about the belly band. Im not worried about him impregnating anyone. If anyone is dumb enough to bring a female dog in heat to the dog park and my 2 pound chihuahua actually manages to mount her...well...those pups were meant to be heh. IP: Logged |
