hello everyone, i am new here i have a peke a poo she is almost 12 yrs old, her name is gidget and she is all white, her fur on the back end [starts at the waist] is real curly and the fur on the top half of her is loose she is going blind,[she suffers the same thing as older people] her eyes are deying out and there is really nothing they can do. she still plays like a puppy, but i would like to know how long do they usually live. i don't know and i feel like she may not live too much longer, she is real healthy and she and i are always together, she sits with me,sleeps with me and eats with me sometimes. i would also like to know when it is too late to mate them? if anyone could help me i would appriciate it. thanks smiling eyes IP: Logged |

I wouldn't breed any female past 7 years old and even at that age there are concerns. Health, temperament and type should be the goal in breeding and one should be informed about responsible breeding. It would not be good to breed a 12 year old female! And especially one who is going blind and quote:- I am guessing you are referring to cataracts?? Cataracts are most often inherited......sometimes caused from diabetes. Poodles are prone to hereditary cataracts. A Pekinese/poodle cross might be even more so. Did the breeder of your dog CERF the eyes of your dog's sire and dam? If you bred a dog with this condition likely it will be passed on. Why would you want to breed? Why not purchase another pet from a reputable breeder? Or www.petfinder.com probably has many poodle mixes that need good homes. IP: Logged |

hi jas, thanks for the info. i ment that her eyes get dry just like old peoples and they need imatation[hope that is spelled right]liquid tears to keep them moist, or at least that is what the vet has said. she has always been a very good dog [ baby ] she has never even nipped a child. i got her when i first moved to alabama, a friend of ours breed the parents and she was getting ready to move and could not find the papers for her but i really didn't care about the papers just her. she is my baby. can you tell me about how long they do live or about how long.also can you tell me about how much the cost or about how much they run anyway.. thanks smiling eyes IP: Logged |

ah, ok gotcha. ideally the breeder of your dogs should have a good idea of life expectancy. Its not uncommon for poodles to live to their late teens, but your guess is as good as mine price depends, if you get your dog from a shelter you could be looking at around $60-100 + , some breeders charger several hundred or even a thousand plus for what they call a "designer" dog IP: Logged |

A blind dog that is healthy can live with no problem. People do it all the time. Generally small dogs do live up into their teens 15 to 18 years, If very healthy. I don't think site matters in this. My aunts poodle was blind for quite a few years before she had to have her put down. Having a buddy to play with can help to keep her young in mind. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Dont mate her if you want to keep her around for as long as possible. You WILL loose in in the birth i wouild not breed any of my females past the age of 7. chances are she would be way too stressed, and wouldnt understand whats going on. If she's given you unconditional love and happyness for thee past 12 years of your life doesnt she deserve a good retirement for her remaining years???? IP: Logged |
