Hi everyone,

I have a quick question for all of you out there who have had your dog either spayed or neutered. Since your dog has been neutered/spayed, have you noticed any behavioral changes?

I have fostered numerous cats in the past and have had each of them neutered/spayed. The only difference I noticed in them was that some of them became a little more calm. I realize that dogs and cats are two entirely different animals, but that is the only experience I have had with the neutering/spaying of an animal.

I will be bringing Mickey & Tigger in on Monday to be neutered, and I am hoping that their personalities do not change dramatically. They just have the best personalities (although, I may be little biased about that )!!!

Oh, and one more question. Approximately how long did it take before your dog fully recovered and was "back to normal?" Just curious about that!

Thanks in advance for any input,
Kristi

yay for you for getting the pups "fixed".. i did not notice any difference in bella's personality after the spaying.. she felt a little ill from the anesthesia, but she got over it quickly.. dogs are similar to cats in the recovery period.. if they are males it shouldn't take them long at all; the procedure of neutering is easier on the animal than spaying.. spaying takes a couple of days to get over, maybe even a week (or until stitches are out) before you see the pup back to their usual self..
if they are males then they may calm down a little; spaying is supposed to help the male tendencies to, ah, turn stuffed animals and such into little female doggies
anyway.. hope this helps.. and yay for you..

I just read yesterday that neutering a male will sometime make a dominate female even more dominate. Probably becuase the male will be less aggressive. Mine were both already altered when I got them. Well my female I had her a month before she was spayed. I had to get her healthy before her spay. She was fiesty both ways.
One major thing after the (job) listen to the vet, when he says, only very small amounts of water for the next 12 hours or so he means it. Otherwise your dog will vomit up any water he has just chugged down, Living experience. You can also put the e-collar on the male becuase more that likely he will be the one to try to pull out the stitches or staples. The female you can put a little t-shirt on to protect stitches from the ground. Stll you can do that for the male. Good luck.

Thanks for the input bellasmommy & puttin510!

Puttin510 - Could you please explain to me what the e-collar is? Is it one of those cone-shaped devices? Since they are both males, I would probably need two of them, right?

Thank You Once Again,
Kristi

Yes it is the cone shaped things. You could probably ask the vet for one. You may not even have to ask. But if they don't give you one ask. They also sell them at pet stores. There is a different kind that they sell also that is not so in the way. It basically is this stiff thing put on the neck so the dog can not turn back toward the wound. Not sure what they call them though. They are better in the way that the regular ones you will find you dog bumping into everything with the cone and having a hard time gettting at its food and water. But they can be taken off while eating. Do not under-estimate your dog and think he will be good about not touching the stitches. My sisters poodle had to be restapled twice because the groomer trusted him without the cone for a few minutes. So yep, get two and have them wear it until the stitches come off.
