About 10 months ago I posted a question about whether it was better to have one dog or two. I had a toy poodle puppy and was considering getting another one. I got some good advice to wait until my puppy was trained. Six months later I asked the question again and received support that two toy poodles would get along fine. My first poodle was a silver male that was neutered at 4 months. He was born Dec. 28, 2002. I got a second poodle, a black female, that was born Sept. 13, 2003. She will be 14 weeks old tomorrow. It has was worked out perfectly. We brought her home at 7 weeks and they adjusted immediately. She was tiny, but a real trooper. They have played and played and really enjoy each other's company. I made a special effort not to neglect Sage in favor of the puppy, Ellie. It's a temptation because puppies are so cute. (Puppy kisses are the best.) Sage used to almost act panicky when we left him home alone. He would struggle to get out the door with us. Now, he seems content to stay with Ellie. There has been no downside for us in having two poodles and lots of positives. It is fun to watch Ellie as she learns. She is so easy to train because she watches everything Sage does and copies him. That's why it is a good idea to make sure the first dog is well trained before getting another one. My biggest problem has been to find a good groomer. I brushed and worked with both of them from the beginning, but neither likes to be groomed. I have taken Sage to three different groomers before today and they have all said he nipped. I was ready to give him Ace Promazine to calm him, but I took him to another groomer today. She works right in a veterinary office. I have to travel a ways, but my veterinarian says she is the best. She didn't want to use Ace Promazine without giving it a try first. They were both groomed this morning and did just fine. She has the touch. I have a couple of professional clippers and I plan to do touch-ups of feet and face in between grooms, but I am relieved that I have found a good groomer. I appreciate all the support and advice I find on this message board. IP: Logged |

GenDen, I am glad to hear that everything has worked out so well for you and your puppies!!! Luckily, when I got my two shih-poos we were told about and excellent (and I mean EXCELLENT, words just can't describe this woman) groomer. She happened to be a certified dog trainer in the obedience classes I take my two dogs to. But, she also does grooming out of her home. She is more than willing to let you stay and watch as she does it and she is also more than glad to teach you how to groom your dog if one so desires to do so. Tigger, one of my shih-poos, is VERY good while he is being groomed. Mickey, the other shih-poo, is sometimes a little impacient. He would much rather be playing than groomed, but all in all, he is pretty good while being groomed. I was so worried about finding a quality groomer that would take good care of my two dogs, but fortunately I have found the best there is (in my opinion )!!! As far as getting two puppies at once: With all that said, even though things have worked flawlessly for me, I don't encourage others to do the same thing because it can present quite a challenge in some situations. Fortunately for me (and some others), getting two at once has worked out very well. Just thought I would share my experience in this area. YELLING!!! Where are the pictures. I have to see the new pup and how pretty sage is. That is such good news. You have had the same thing happen as did with us. Your Sage loves to be with the puppy while your not home. Doesn't it put your mind at ease. Post pictures. Will the new one stay black? ------------------ IP: Logged |

To prevent nipping, handle all parts of your dog regularly. If you find a part that they don't like being touched then all the more reason to touch it. if they dont like it and try to nip you put a muzzle on them (Panty hose works AWESOME and you only have to use it once or twice) i think that if you have enough time to groom them yourself then you should. Chekc out a library or contact your local kennel club for info on a grooming seminar. it can be long hard work but you string of compliments you get on your dog on how good they look can be REALLY self gratifying.
