hi there i've just join this site and i'm truly in need of help. i've got 2 female mini schnauzers (3yrs n 1 yrs respectively). the problem is they had little contact with other dogs when they were young and the older one is very nervous around anyone (not to mention other dogs) and tends to growl then bark. so much so that it has become very difficult for us to walk them as they start barking like unfriendly wild dogs (when in fact they're just overexcited i guess) when they meet other dogs in the park etc. sometime back we've engaged a trainer to help us overcome the problem but much as i hate to admit it, the trainer wasn't very good in correcting the problem and we're still facing the same problem. we've resorted to using a muzzle when they go out so that they don't cause a nuisance. can someone please please help with suggestions on what i can do. i really love them like my own and i know i'm not doing things correctly. ric ------------------ IP: Logged |

Welcome rtaye, It sounds like you have a little issue at hand. The only suggestion I can give is this: When I first got my two shih-poos they came down with Kennel Cough, so early socialization with other dogs was not possible due to the fact that the Kennel Cough is so contagious. Once their kennel cough was gone we enrolled them in puppy class where they also had the oppurtunity to play with other puppies. And for the first couple of weeks they were absoulutely terrified of other dogs because they weren't able to be socialized early on. But, with the help of the trainers and continual playtimes, they were soon having a blast during their playtime. So, as you can see, it is possible to get a dog accustomed to other dogs, it is just a matter of time and proper instruction. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Hope it all works out well, IP: Logged |

You do have an issue .A class for them is the best thing but older dogs are harder to get to come round to your way of thinking .I would talk to a few people that run the obedience classes and see how to start them ,whether alone at first and a slow but one on one intro to others ,maybe instead of both being in the same class ,each in a different one ..That could help as sometimes when the two that are use to each other are together all the time ,they pick up each others habits .It is worth a try anyway . There is a trainer/behaviorist here that also runs a canine social group. If you can find such a group in your area I think it could be beneficial. IP: Logged |

tahnks everyone for your quick response. i truly feel like at least there's friends out there who understand my dilemma. the suggestions are good n i'll try to check out a few group obedience school suitable for them. yes a trainer who's able to ease them in to a group slowly would seem like the best option or else they'll remain isolated from other dogs and see us as their "only" pack which is something that i do not want to happen. i'll be sure to let u know their progress hopefully with success. thanks everyone again!
