Hello, everyone!

I have a female Shih-poo puppy that's 4 1/2 months old and she does something odd when she eats. She'll walk over to her bowl, pick up some kibble, walk about a foot and a half away, eat it, and walk back. Then the process repeats. The behavior isn't harmful and I don't care to change it, but she's been doing this ever since I got her (at 10 weeks) and I was wondering what this behavior means.

Thanks,
Alison

Both of my dogs do this. I have been told that out in the wild dogs would kill their prey in one place then eat it somewhere else. That is the behavior they may be doing by grabbing their food and eating it somewhere else. Most of the dogs I have had ate this way. It does make sense to me about being related to how they were when they were wild.

Hi! i have a male Shi-poos, he is now three years old, and i had him sense he was three weeks old. And i can tell you that is a normal behavior. when toto was small, he also ate two times a day and divide the food, leaving some for later, i thought there was something wrong because he was a baby and the vet told me that some of these dogs usually do that.
When Toto is happy he always eat and i usually give him a treat when i get home, and he loves it. Toto has this little rug under his bowl and when he is done eating i just pick it up and clean the crumbs.
you have a really easy dog to potty trained, Toto goes with me every where on vacations and to my family and friends house and i trained him to go in the bathroom, and thats what he looks for when we are out.
I hope this helps you out.

Both of my dogs do this as well. My aussie x actually takes a large mouthful and drops kibbles across the floor as she walks away from her dish....on the way back to the dish she stops and picks up each kibble one by one and eats it....then repeats. I always thought this was quite funny to watch.
