We purchased a Yorkie in April, he was 4mths old when we got him, and he come from a breeder..(prob not the cleanist place I've ever seen)but he checked out ok at the vet. He recently had his surgery so he wouldnt be a daddy...(didnt mention that our little Yorkie is only 3lbs)the vet told us prob top size for (Gizmo) is around 5 lbs. He is a "wonderful" little dog...EXCEPT..for one thing...we can't seem to get this little dog potty trained, we dont want to do the paper thing, we really want him to go outside...my whole family is involved in trying to break him...but nothing is working...we crate him, take him out..he does his thing...comes back in...and not 10mins later..he's done it again inside ! How, is possible that a dog could have to go ALL the time. We DO NOT keep food and water out..he has scheduled feeding times, we take him out after he eats..but we still seem to find little markings around the house in different areas.
What are we doing wrong ? We've heard that
Yorkies are HARD to train ? Is, that true..or
do we just have a stubborn dog on our hands ?
We just really are open to any suggestions
of how to stop this !

My mom has a yorkie named Tia, and she was hard to potty train too! She is 6 months old, and she still has many accidents. We use Piddle Pads from fostersmith, but my advice to you would be: Number one I'm sure you already know but, never keep your baby out of site when you let him out. This may be unreal but, Hawks can pick them up and take them away, as well as people wanting to steal them! Next, it is odd that your Yorkie is having accidents all the time, considering you dont leave food or water out. Maybe you should have him checked at the vet for a bladder infection? If thatsa no, then just take him out side every ten minutes until he finally does "his buisness". Then go over board with praises! Another thing...to teach them to go out side, I know that some people like to train them to go on a paper in the house, and slowly move the paper to the door until its out side on the grass....This may be a long process but it may be more successful. Let me know how things work out! (maybe you can get some pictures posted some time)

Believe me, I know exactly how you feel. My little one is absolutely wonderful EXCEPT she still does her business in the house. I brought her by a friend of mine this past Sat. and she has a huge backyard. We were sitting out there most of the day and night with Mia outside. Can you believe that I actually caught her running inside to do her business and then running back outside to play?? I get very frusterated too, so I wish there was advise I could give you, but I'm still trying to learn what to do!

The best advice I can give you is to simply keep your eyes on the dog AT ALL TIMES when he is out of his crate. Even keep him on a leash inside if you have to so that you know where he is and what he is doing at all times. You will quickly pick up on the "signs" that he is about to go or has to go such as sniffing or circling. This way when he is about to go you will see him and you can get him outside right away before he goes on the floor. Give him lots of praise and maybe even a little treat the second he is done doing his business outside. I know its sounds like a pain in the butt to have to watch his every move...but I assure you its the most effective way. Good luck

ok you gave me the visual too. lol sorry the thing is no matter what our dogs do or how rotten they get sometimes it's hard to get mad at them.they give that little puppy look like i'm sorry , then you melt and then....they go do it again lol

I have a 10 month old Yorkie and he just got the hang of going outside. Make sure you invest in a good carpet cleaner. (The Bissel Pro Steam works great.) They are harder to train I suppose. He just would go as soon as I wasn't looking, no matter how often he was let out. I just moved to a new house and he can come in and out as he pleases, so there were no excuses for him to go in the house, he recently just stopped going inside. You can't let them out of your site if you can't watch them or keep an eye on your yorkie confine him to the kitchen or his crate because they seem like they are just waiting for you to look the other way. You've probably got another 4-5 months before your puppy really learns not to go in the house.

this is just a thought, but if he really seems to want to go inside....you could try doggy litter....i have a shipoo and for about the first year he always insisted on still going inside....and finaly we managed to get him trained with the litter....he is now using the outside most of the time but there are still instances where he will coming inside and use the litter....its worth a shot....the litter doesnt need to be changed and all that as often as the puppypads....and it is good with keeping any odors down too!
