Hi all, My 12 y.o. girl has been "off" today, she didn't finish her dry food last night although there are broken pieces in the dish, as if she crunched some but didn't finish it. I tried to check her teeth but she won't even let me near her mouth to look, she pulls away (she normally doesn't like it but tolerates it). She did eat a small amount of canned food today and went back to the water dish (fountain) 3 times and seemed to be trying to catch the water as it flowed down the ramp rather than lap it up. Does this sound like a dental problem? We are planning on taking her to our vet tomorrow but I wouldn't want to wait if it is something that requires immediate attention. This came on suddenly and she seems to be comfortable otherwise. Thanks. IP: Logged |

Hello. There is always the possibility (especially at that age) that she may be having problems with her teeth and/or gums. However, her not eating could also be due to many other things. In the meantime you may want to just give her soft food just to get her to eat. Let us know what you find out. IP: Logged |

Yes, take her to the vet as soon as possible. It might be a dental problem, but it could be something else. The excess drinking and age makes me think it might be diabetes. But we can guess all day. Put your mind to rest and have her examined. IP: Logged |

Thanks for the input, guys. I took Bonnie to the vet this morning and, touch wood, they didn't find anything wrong. They checked her teeth and did a blood glucose test and both were fine. She is eating canned food but is ignoring the dry. We will be watching her closely but hopefully she will be ok in a few days. IP: Logged |
