I have two cats (just under 6 months old) who share the same litter. I just noticed this morning that there was a couple pieces of very dark hardened feces. does anybody know if this is normal?

Hello. It depends. There is always the possibility that it may contain blood. If you're very worried you could put the 'sample' in a zip lock bag and have your vet take a look at it. If there is blood in the sample this may be very serious. If it was my kitty that is what I would do. I would think most vets would not charge you to take a quick look. Unless they want to test the sample. Even that would not burn a hole in your wallet. Keep us posted.

Basically what Chessmind said. If it is black, that is dried blood. I think if it is just a dark brown then that is fine.

Actually, I've read that black means digested blood, meaning it came from the stomach/small intestine region (could mean stomach ulcer). If you ever find fresh red blood, it's closer to the end of the digestive track and is obviously undigested.

Glad you're taking it to the vet, though. That's what I'd do as well.

The kittens have their appt next week. I was cleaning out their litter tonight and the dark feces is gone. it just seems to be at the end but the rest is normal colour? What do you think this means? should I still be worried?

I think (i'm no expert) that that means that part of it took longer to digest. I'm not 100% what this could mean; maybe nothing, maybe some bowel problem. My dog had this for a long time when I was changing her food over, I talked to the vet and he wasn't terribly concerned. It fixed itself later though.

Just for my info, what do you consider a normal color? My cat does dark brown poops all the time so I figure that is normal for him.

Hi Thanks for your input. What I mean by normal is that it is always a brown colour. Whether it be dark or light brown is what I consider normal. Thanks again for youer advice!
