Just wondering if you had any suggestions on what would be an alternative for my kitty Ozzie to eat, he is currently on Hill's prescription diet c/d for urinary crystals? I've heard negative things mentioned several times about Hill's and even Iames which my newest addition is being fed which is what his breeder had started him on.... and in her defense she is a wonderful women who raises the most beautiful, sociable, snuggly kittens....she loves them sooooooooo much, so I just can't imagine why these foods are so horrible, and I just don't really wanna go look at the "disturbing" web site. So, if you can tell me what food I could use for Ozzie that will keep him crystal free the way Hill's does....and Hill's worked instantly for him and he was really bad....peeing blood and couldn't stay out of the litter box and was crying....it was so aweful to see him like that, so that is why I'm so hesitant to switch him to any other food even though it does concern me to hear these things about the food he is eating. Now Simon, the newest,he has no special concerns to consider so I plan on switching him to another brand, and I would appreciate suggestions. Thanks. IP: Logged |

Personally, I would keep him on the Hill's prescription diet unless you can find another prescription diet that is suitable for crystals. I beleive IVD (Innovative Veterinary Diets) makes a formula that replaces the Hill's c/d....you can ask your vet about it. Unfortunately, there are no replacement diets (that Im aware of) for Hill's c/d that you can buy at a store and switching to a non-prescription brand could be detrimental to your cat's health. Just my 2 cents. Hope this helps. IP: Logged |

Hello. I found a web-site that may offer some information about your cat's urinary crystals. Below is some of the information from: http://cats.about.com/cs/catmanagement101/f/foodurinaryhlth.htm A great deal of research has been on-going as to the relationship of diet to urinary tract health, and the thinking has changed over a period of just a few years. Originally it was thought that diets high in magnesium and ash contributed to the problem; now more emphasis is being placed on the pH of urine (acidic or alkaline). (Veterinarians recommend a range between 6.0 and 6.5) Unfortunately, special diets which prevent the formation of one kind of crystal can actually cause the other. Generally, a good quality commercial food should be fine for your cat. I would recommend avoiding fish flavored foods, which are said to be suspect in crystal formation. I would also recommend that you supplement your cat's dry food diet with a small amount of canned food each day, also avoiding the fish flavors, with the eventual goal of getting him on a mostly- or wholly-canned food diet. Make sure your cat always has plenty of fresh, clean water, and avoid feeding him table scraps. Watch carefully for any signs of distress, such as straining to urinate or missing the litterbox.
