I know that giving cats dairy products is not very good for them. Is this because of the Lactose. I was just wondering because I saw "Cat milk" at the pet store that said it was 97% lactose reduced. While being lactose intolerant my-self my milk is 99.9% lactose reduced so is my yogurt. Blanche being the pickiest eater in the world suprised me yesterday when she actually ate some of my yogurt. I would love to give her this regularly as a treat (approx. 1/2 tbs 3x a week) , since she wont eat most things. So is this better for her than regular milk products? I don't want to start giving it to her and than find out its bad for her so I haven't really given her any yet. IP: Logged |

Cats don't produce enough of the enzyme lactase to properly digest lactose which is why some cats get digestive upsets after drinking milk or some other dairy products although most cats do seem to be able to tolerate small amounts of these products just fine. I've given my cats milk, yogurt and cottage cheese ( only in small amounts on ocassion) and they've never had any problems. I'm sure small amounts of lactose reduced yogurt would be fine. I can't see a problem with giving your cat lactose free, or very reduced, dairy products in my experiance cats love all dairy products(must be like me and spicy food love it no good for me ) but I would still give dairy in small amounts as a treat as these things can be very high in fat and not good for your kitties waistline! I have heard that it is good to give cats yogurts when they are on anitbiotics. The same is true for people, yogurt has good bacteria in it to help replace the ones killed by the antibiotics. I would imagine you don't want to give them very much since it is a dairy product, but lactose reduced yogurt should be better than regular. IP: Logged |

Hello. If Handsome had his way he would have dairy products for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I rarely give him any dairy, as I know it's not good for him, but he does get it occasionaly as a special treat. He thinks string cheese or grated cheese is some kind of live worm. He goes nuts if I throw it up in the air. He'll race over to it, try and catch it, throw it up in the air himself and attacks it some more. It's the funniest thing. Don't even think of opening up any yogurt around him (even if it's a soy yogurt). He'll practically swat it out of your hand (without his claws out). I sometimes give him the little bit that is left in the container, and he'll try to squeeze his entire face into it to get a few licks of it. Then he's got yogurt on all over his face and he's as happy as can be. He's so funny. IP: Logged |
