OK its after midnight and we've had an accident! Sam was climbing the drawers in the kitchen and one of them fell out on to him! Now is tail is oddly bent and he can't seem to move it past the bent part! Its bleeding a little but that looks like a superficial cut...very little blood. What do I do?! Its the middle of the night and if you touch his tail he cries which makes me want to cry. Is it a bruise? Can a cat break their tail? I suppose I shall have to wait until morning to call the vet but I am so upset right now!!! Everything else on him looks ok so I think the drawer only caught his tail. Anyone else ever have this happen? I'll call the vet in the am but is there anything I can do for him until then??? ------------------ IP: Logged |

I called the emergency vet and they told me it does indeed sound like a break. They also said I can wait til morning and call my normal vet since there isn't much they can do for him right now anyways. I guess we're making a vet visit tomorrow. What do they do for this kind of thing? I don't want him to lose a part of his tail!!! I feel so bad for him I want to cry! He seems a little better now, running around with Rory. Seems quite scared though poor baby...won't even let me hold him. His poor tail!! IP: Logged |

I'm really not sure what they can do other than amputate the tail. Maybe they can set it? Did you ask the emergency vet if you can give him something for the pain? I'm sure it hurts quite a bit. I know there is one thing they can't have (acetametaphin I think), but I'm pretty sure they can have something else, maybe asprin. Call them back and ask if you didn't already ask. Maybe you can at least make him a little more comfortable until you can take him to the vet. IP: Logged |

Thanks fleafly. He seems better this morning. Still can't really touch his tail and it looks quite swollen but he's playing nirmally and does let me pet him again. I called the vet and they told me to bring him in this afternoon. If the break is bad they will have to amputate. I hope it's not bad!! IP: Logged |

I had a cat who broke just the very tip of his tail. It got slammed in a door (not by me, but by my idiot brother). Well, the vet didn't do anything about it and the cat got over it. I guess if the break is more in the middle of the tail then you would have to do something about it. On Whitey (the cat) it was just the last inch of his tail. Anyways, hope the cat gets better.
