I don't know of any cat diseases that can be spread to humans. I'd expect that if you disinfect the food dishes and such a new cat would be fine. Also be sure to use a disinfecting cleaner on any surfaces that the cat may have vomited or pooed on. IP: Logged |

This site lists some of the diseases that can be spread from pets to people: http://vetmedicine.about.com/cs/zoonotic/a/zoonotic.htm [This message has been edited by nern (edited 01-13-2004).] IP: Logged |

It depends on the disease. Like nern said there are a lot of diseases that are transmissable from animals to humans. What wasn't on the list in that link are Salmonella, E. Coli, & Giarrdia. There are a lot more, those are just the ones that come to mind. If you can have an autopsy done at a decent price, I would do it. Sometimes the state vet labs, or vet schools will do one for free. Until you know why she died, you wont know if it is contagious to you or your family. IP: Logged |

Also if it was distemper the virus can't be killed by anything but bleach, it's very resistant. It does not infect people. But it can live in the environment for up to a year. just a thought. Jenny IP: Logged |
