I have a male cat who has recurring urinary tract problems. He will pee blood, then have to go on antibiotics for three weeks and only eat the Prescription SD diet. This cures the problem, but he hates that food. My vet says there is no other alternative. Can anyone else offer advice on other high quality foods that prevent the urinary tract infections? Thanks. my dog goes to a holistic vet for various things and we were discussing cranberry supplements for dogs and cats having problems with urinary issues. She told me that cats respond very well to cranberry supplements...so you might want to give that a try. Does your cat eat only dry food? I understand dry only can cause urinary problems. If you feed him the canned SD food and add warm chicken broth or tuna juice maybe he'd eat it better. IP: Logged |

We had a cat who had this problem. We didn't give him the SD diet; we bought some stuff at the grocery store that was for urinary tract health. (He refused to eat the SD). We also gave him the cranberry stuff and it seemed to help also. He no longer has any problems. IP: Logged |

Hill's S/D has a more acidic target urine ph than most other diets so it may not be easy to find an alternative that is commercially available. There are other prescription diets that may be suitable such as Purina, IDV or Waltham. Maybe you can ask your vet about one these? IP: Logged |

Hello. I know that the UTI paste works pretty well (they use it at the shelter I help out at). I found a web-site that carries it. It only costs $8.00. Or you can see if your local pet store carries it or something like it. The info below is from this link (if you want to purchase it on-line). http://www.pet-dog-cat-supply-store.com/shop/uti-paste-cats.php UTI Paste - Cats - Urinary Tract Health IP: Logged |

quote: In my previous post this should have read "IVD". A few people on the Vet to Vet board said that IVD has a new prescription formula that is similar to Hill's S/D. IP: Logged |

Has anyone heard of the pet food brand called, Pinacle? (I think that is how you spell it) It has very good ingredients and has cranberry listed as one of them. I gave it to my cats for a while, but it's a bit pricey. If you've read any of my other threads, we switched to Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul. It is cheaper and it has cranberry also, plus a lot of other natural vegetables and vitamins. My advise is try one of these two brands. I know there are more brands out there, Innova is really good food, but it's so darn expensive. IP: Logged |

I have heard Pinancle is good but haven't tried it. Chicken Soup is pretty good. My cats like it a lot. They have foul smelling gas on it though. Well my one cat who farts does. It's horrible. IP: Logged |

Readers will get a kick out of this. My little one just crashed her paws into the monitor chasing the little animated cat in the upper-right corner of this window. She's just too hilarious. I downloaded the aquarium screen saver and she hasn't been the same since. Every time I sit at the computer she stands on my keyboard and paws at the screen. The little animated emoticons also drive her crazy. IP: Logged |

Fleafly, I'm ROFL! Reminds me of one of my cats. I have an abysinian that has horrible smelling gas. But he only seems to do this if he's frightened or caught off guard. He's done this even before I put them all on the Chicken Soup. Perhaps the vegetable matter in the food produces it, I don't know. I don't notice it with any of the other 8 cats I have though.
