Unfortunately today, my cat died of what the vet said was a stroke. I would just like to confirm this. She was fine yesterday and acting normally. The last time we checked up on her was at 1 this morning. She was still fine. The reason that we checked up on her so often is becuase although she was small, she ate a enormous amount and never seemed to gain weight. She was about 98 years old in human age we estimated because the SPCA wasn't able to place an exact age when we got her. We've had her for eight years now. She was a Manx cat. Anyway, we found her this morning in her pad laying on her side and sort of doing a mix of moaning and meowing. We thought it was something she ate but we went to the vet with her. She seemed to be trying to get up but she could not seem to. Her pupils were dilated and I don't think she could see anymore because she didn't register me when I put a finger in front of her eyes but she was still registering touch and sound. The vet did his examination and then said she was having seizures and she was desperately trying to breathe. She was even clawing the air. They put her in an oxygen tent and then told us that she had a slim chance of surviving. We decided to put her down. When the vet came back in with her, she was still moaning but now I was sure that she couldn't see or hear anymore and I wasn't even sure if she could feel either. The vet said she had thrown multiple blood clots to her back legs which were cold, her heart and possibly brain. As the vet tried to find her kidneys, my cat stopped breathing. Then the vet injected it into her heart and she died. They said that she probably had had a heart condition for awhile and that there was no way we would have known. I am wondering if this was a stroke that she had or a combination of factors? Does anyone know of a website where I could get more info?

I'm sorry for your loss. I don't know of any websites off the top of my head, which relate to your kitty. Although, I'm sure there are some. Just type in some 'key words' in which you want information or check this site and see if any other members can help you.

I've seen cats on t.v. having strokes from Hartz flea drops. As for the heart condition one of my foster kitties had this a few years ago (as well as many other complications).

Again, I'm so sorry for your loss.

Thank you very much. I just can't get over how she died so suddenly. The vet said that the conditon just came up suddenly. Does my report sound like she had a stroke from your experience? I don't think it was fleas because we kept her indoors all the time and were careful about that sort of thing. My guess along with the vet's was that it was multiple blood clots along with old age that led to her death.

Well, all living things can all of a sudden get severe complications, which lead to their passing on. I'm not certain what exactly was the cause of your kitty's complications. I think your vet may be correct. Sometimes, it helps to know exactly what went wrong, but that's not always the cards we are dealt.

It sounds to me like your kitty was very loved and you have some sad days ahead of you. I had my first kitty for 20.5 years. She passed away a few years ago and I still miss her and keep her picture up. You'll feel better with time. Hang in there. Let us know if there is anything else we can help you with.
