Help! I have three cats, one male age 10 and brother and sister age 3. All are fixed. About six months ago I brought home two kittens (male & female). Brother and sister were very upset about this. Oldest cat has no problems with the kittens. Sister stayed at the neighbors until recently. She seems to be adjusting to the kittens. Her brother, however, has never adjusted. He started spraying about three months ago and it's getting worse. I tried Feliway plug-in (just one) with no luck. I now have the Feliway spray and am using it on the affected areas. Too soon to tell if it works. Brother has also become aggressive towards the eldest cat. He's acting like a bully and terrifying him. I live in a house with a cat door so everyone can come and go as they please. Any suggestions? Should I hire a behavorist? It's getting to the point where I'm getting mad and yelling at the poor cat when he sprays. Also, he's now starting to get up on the kitchen counter and spray. He ruined the toaster so I put double-stick tape on the counter. It seems to be working. Thanks for any and all suggestions! IP: Logged |

Sounds like your situation is really bad. I heard about a cat being given diazapam I think it was to control spraying. Once it is under control you can slowly wean the cat off of it. Ask your vet about it. It should stop the spraying and make him less aggressive so you can work on all of the issues you have going on. IP: Logged |

Take him to the vet and have him checked for any urinary problems...this is the major cause of inappropriate spraying and urination. Have the vet do a thorough check, bloodwork and all. Then get some Nature's Miracle and thoroughly clean all the spots he has sprayed, this will get rid of the odor and help prevent future spraying. I know it's frustrating...but hang in there... Hi, What your male cat is doing is marking his scent as if to say to the kittens this is my terriotory stay out of it. Even though cats both male and female are spayed/nuetered if new cats or kittens are introduced into the family they usually tend to spray to mark bounderies. I would still have him checked by a vet to make sure there is nothing wrong. Tom Cats are very funny animals and dont like there space intruded especially by kittens. But as for him getting up on the worktops and spraying this is not normal, His agression could be associated with a health problem he may have please keep us posted on how he is getting on. mike IP: Logged |

He's obviously not pleased with the new residents. Usually once they start spraying they don't stop, neutered or not. Ask your vet.

Thanks very, very much for all the replies. I'm so glad I found this web site! I've been so frustrated and hoped the problem would correct itself. Knowing there's a support system out there makes all the difference in the world! I'm going to take the "problem child" to the vet and will let you know the outcome. Happy Holidays! IP: Logged |
