I know this is probably a common behavior, but does anyone know why cats sniff each others butts? My cats do it to each other all the time. I have nine cats by the way. I know that they use that scent gland located in the roof of their mouths but my question is WHY do they do this? I notice that mine will do it to each other if they seem to want one cat to move out of their way, but do you think that is really the reason? I've also read that in ferrel cats they do it to see what the other cats have eaten recently. Does this apply? Just curious :-) IP: Logged |

They have scent glands around their bums and cats get alot of the information about another cat from scent. They can tell how old a cat is, what sex it is, whether it is sexually active, if it is unwell, possibly they also can tell what sort of mood the cat is in too. So they sniff each others bums as a kind of hello, didn't you ever wonder why when you cat greets you it puts its tail up? It is an invitation for you to have a good sniff and see what's going on!!!
