Just an update. My kitties had their surgery on Monday. Everything went fine. When I got to the vet's office, I did a complete 360, and decided to get the blood work done (I just had a feeling), and thank GOD I did. Turns out the little girl had an elevated liver level and they had to use a different anthesia on her. Talk about going with your gut feeling.
They said it could be a 'fluke', but I have to take her back in 3 weeks for another test.

I *always* get the bloodwork done before any kind of anaesthesia is used. My puppy even got limited bloodwork done before they sedated her to do x-rays, and she wasn't even being put under all the way.

To me, it is very important to do the bloodwork. As in your kitty's case, there could be something wrong with the liver so that the kitty would not handle the anaesthesia well. It's not as likely with a young cat, but I think we are so used to surgeries in this day and age that we tend to forget how dangerous it really is to be under anaesthesia.

When one of my dogs had a surgery, the bloodwork didn't uncover anything relevant to the surgery, but it did show high cholesterol (we were very surprised) and we changed her diet as a result.

You never know!

Good thing you listened to your feeling. Our instincts are usually right, but a lot of people don't listen to them. I've actually never had a vet ask me about doing bloodwork before neutering and spaying.

Glad to hear you got the bloodwork done and caught that before the surgery. I'll have to keep this in mind if I ever have to have any of mine put under again.
