My two and a half month old kitten has a big round belly and people have said it means he has worms. I've never heard this and wondered what other people thought. He went to the vet a couple weeks ago (his belly was like that then, too) and he never mentioned it. I also haven't noticed anything when he goes to the bathroom. Thanks for any help! IP: Logged |

He should've been tested for worms. Every kitten I've gotten has had them. You should call your vet and ask if you can drop off a stool sample for them to test. It has always been my understanding that worms is fairly common in kittens and easily remedied. My kitten was given one dose of the medicine in the mouth for hers. IP: Logged |

Worms are very common in kittens, they can get them from their mothers milk. If they have a pot-bellied stomach (almost looks like a pregnant belly), it can be an indication of worm.... but it doesn't necessarily always mean they have them. It could just be the shape of your cats belly. When I first got my kitten from the shelter... he had the pot-bellied stomach, and ALOT of gas... farted ALL the time, and he did test positive for roundworms. Another indication of worms is dull choppy looking fur, my kitten also had that symptom... it almost looked like he had spiked hair, it stuck out everywhere like he had the frizzies... LOL You can't see it when they go to the bathroom either, because they don't come out until the vet de-worms them. (unless it's a very serious case, and they've had the worms for years). Your vet wouldn't know if your cat has them or not, unless you take in a stool sample for them to test. As soon as my vet de-wormed him, I could see a bunch of dead worms in his stool... YUCK!!! Good luck, I hope your kitty doesn't have them. IP: Logged |

Thank you for the replies! I will take a stool sample to the vet. As for a kitten with a rumbling belly and lots of farts, that's just like my little one! IP: Logged |

Oh my goodness .. I didn't know all that. I figured on my first check up (the week I brought her home) that they would test for ear mites/worms/etc. cuz they knew I got her from a shelter .. but they did no tests, just gave her her vaccination. Same w/ the second trip to the vet last week, they just gave her her two shots (rabbies/vaccination) and gave me the perscription for the ear mites. ------------------ IP: Logged |
