My kitten had her shots the other day at the vet and she also had a check up. He started cleaning her ears w/ the big Q-tips, and they came out pretty dirty. I asked if that was from the litter box dust? He said no, it was probably ear mites. Had she been itching her ears like crazy lately? I said no .. cuz she wasn't, and still isn't. He suddenly comes back w/ a prescription that cost $45 .. no problem paying for it, I just wonder .. does she even have them? ------------------ IP: Logged |

Well there are a wide variety of things cats can get in the ears. Normally if they are indoor cats and their ears get dirty it can be a big build up of wax and sometimes a yeast infection in the ears follows. When I took Newton to the vet, the doctor found brown stuff in his ears and he said he would have to look at the debris under the microscope to see if it was mites. I told him Newton was indoor so how could he get mites. Later I was told he had a yeast infection in the ear and they just did a deep ear wash where they flush it out. They only gave him like 12 antibitoc pills and it costed me like 12 bucks. You should ask your vet what was in his ears. Even mite medicine is generally not that expensive. NTC IP: Logged |

Chieve was recently at the vet for his annual exam and he still had ear mites (he was a former stray and had ear mites last year but was treated for them). They cleaned out his ears and looked under a microscope (for $20) to find out for sure....the medication was $30.00 and that was enough to treat 6 cats just incase he had spread it to my other cats. My Vet gave me Ear Mitecide 2oz to treat for one week, skip a week, repeat in 1 week. I used this on my youngest Calico and most of it flew out into my face because she didn't like it and ran throughout the house. She turned and looked at me as if to say what are you trying to do to me you meany? But I can say this, once I was successful in getting it in her ear canal I have not seen her scatch her ear(s) anymore and she is allowed to go outside and this has been close to a year now since she had the mites. The only way to see them is through a Vets scope but if a cat is scatching a ear like mad and flea medicine has been used then it just maybe mites. It's my opinion if a cat has ear mites they are going to scatch, scatch and scatch and if not treated can cause a wound to develope outside of the ear and possible infection because of their claws. Patches scatched like a booger that ear or the outside of it and if they are not scatching and something is found inside the ears in a examine then its not mites but something else like dirt or wax etc. Mitecide I remember costing about $25 I have heard of cats hollering out in extreme pain because of mite infestation in the ears it is worth treating and as I say above can cause infection on the outer ear if not treated. If you ever had mites from hiking in the woods I can say this it is intense really intense the need to scatch where ever they are on the leg to the point of drawing blood. Mac IP: Logged |

I was given Revolution (selamectin topical solution). All I had to do was part the hair on the back of her neck and put some of this serum onto the skin. She sorta freaked, but I got it on her. I have to repeat one month from now. It just seems odd cuz she never scratches or is in pain or anything. ------------------ IP: Logged |
