About 3 months ago my wacko neighbor moved away and left 4 approx 12 wk old kittens to roam the neighborhood(or at least the woods and yard behind a few houses in the neighborhood)...I had no idea she even had them until they pranced in a procession thru my yard last JUNE. I tried fo weeks to coax them over to my yard so that I could maybe trap them and get them fixed or give them away but they were all very skiddish, as if they had no human contact. Unfortunately in AUGUST one got hit by a car right in front of my house so now there are 3. Two of them are still pretty small relative to the third one,who is huge by comparison. They all started out about the same size when i first saw them. Her entire torso is FAT and has been for about a month. I can't tell whether she's eating herself this way or if it is genetic, they get plenty of dry food from me daily. I have 7 indoors already so I cannot take these guys in, and again they run from me if I get too close despite feeding them for the last 3 months. Anyways the last couple of nights the FAT CAT has been hanging on the back porch and actually let me get close to her and rolled over on her back as if to play. Very unusal behavior considering the past 3 months.I finally got a chance to see if it was a male or female and she's definitely a female since she was quite visibly "wide open" so to speak as she stretched her body out. No testicles etc obviously. Again can't tell the sex of the others because I can't get close enough. The cat has a very bushy tail and fairly short paws, kind of like one I rescued last year from my neighborhood, and they probably have the same parents. My indoor is chubby the same way even tho she has been fixed. So that's why I question the genetics of it all. I guess what I am wondering is do cats about to give birth tend to get friendlier and stay a little closer with humans ? Or is she just acting like a typical finicky cat? I suppose if she is pregnant she might either give birth in the woods behind me or right on my porch, I am not sure.I pose these questions to experts on the board..HELP!!!!!LOL! Thanks! IP: Logged |

Chances are she is pregnant. some cats that won't let humans near them usually take to us when they are preganant without actually catching and taking her to a vet there is no way of knowing until she gives birth... From her sitting on your porch more maybe her way of saying she she wants your help or maybe she is looking for somewhere warm.. But her being out in the wild and there is plenty of stray male cats then the chance of her being pregnant are high.... Have your called the local animal shelters and told them of the situation as they will be able to send someone out to try and catch these poor animals.. What makes me angry is if people can not look after animals or don't take them with them when they move home why do they have pets... keep us posted of how the cats are doing and if there is anymore in the respect to her giving birth... mike. Thanks for the reply Mike. Im in Central FL so warmth is not a problem(so far)..LOL...I just figured they were too young to get pregnant because I am guessing they were born sometime in March, maybe early April, based on their size when I saw them end of JUNE..so to get pregnant at 4-5 months seemed unlikely to me, but maybe I am just naive. She is still frolicking and doing flips and stuff with her other 2 siblings which I also find odd if she is pregnant and about due. It is very hard to get thru to animal shelter here. So I simply make sure they are fed and watered and have a place to get out of the rain if needed(porch), but I am probably doing a disservice by enabling this colony. We never had a prob with cats in our neighborhood til 1998 when the wacko neighbor moved in and seemed to start it all with her out door cat. So far I have taken in 2 from the neighborhood since 98..When she moved away with a roaring applause from the other neighbors also, she took one of the new kittens with her according to the new person who moved in, but to leave the others to fend for themselves was downright moronic..but this person was the SCOURGE of our block so this type behavior was not totally unexpected. It was like her final revenge to leave them knowing I would probably care for them, and I have. If she does have a litter I will likely take them to the shelter for adoption hopefully ......I am still hoping she is just a fat furry cat that outgrew her siblings 3 fold LOL......will try to keep you posted...
