Hello everyone. I am new to this website and it looks very helpful. I recently brought a cat home from the humane society and she is the joy of my life. Her name is Chloe and she is a little small for her age. She is 3 months old and she only weighs 2 lbs. She likes to run around my house like a crazy woman!!!!

Here is my question: Is it good to leave food out for her all the time or should I just feed her twice a day? She does not eat very much at one time, so it would be hard to get her on a schedule. I just do not want her to get overweight. While growing up, I had a cat and he was slightly overweight and I do not want that for her. What is the best thing to do?

For young kittens its best to free feed in my opinion until at least 6 months of age. You can always keep a close eye on her weight and change to meal feedings if you feel she is gaining too much. Measuring her food out but allowing her to pick throughout the day is another option....this would also help prevent obesity. Start with the recommended feeding amounts on the back of the bag as a guideline.

Wow!!!! I got a kitten about a month ago (he is now 3 months old) and his name is Chloe too! I feed him whenever he seems hungry and goes to his cupboard. APparently kittens won't overeat and a little extra fat on them wont hurt! Oh my kitten is also 2lbs! When i was reading your topic i thought i had posted it because i was thinking the exact same thing.

I believe in free feeding unless the cat is overweight. Different cats need different amounts of food. The amount on the package to feed is a recommendation not the exact amount every cat sould eat. Most cats are perfectly fine with free feeding, over the course of my life I have done this with over 30 cats, only one ate too much and became overweight. The rest are perfectly healthy and at a good weight.
