Hello all. I have always been told that indoor cats that are properly cared for live about 20 years. Has that been the experience of those of you who have had cats for that long? My babies are 12, going on 13. They are very healthy and have not been sick for over 11 years. Only one has ever been sick, and then it was bladder infections that went away as soon as we changed his food. As I said, this was over 11 years ago. The male seems to be forgetful lately. He forgets that I have fed him until I take him to his bowl and show him his food. It baffles me, because he still plays like a kitten and seems totally fine otherwise. Now we have a new puppy and I am worried about the stress on the cats. I have lost too many pets lately and I can't lose my babies!! So anyway, if anyone has stories about old, healthy cats, please share them!

Growing up, my mom's cats lived to the age of 17. They were mainly indoor cats that went outside here and there. They went outside during the afternoon sometimes, but they had to be in overnight and quite frankly, enjoyed being inside. Going out was their choice when they did. Anyhow, they both developed problems at age 16/17. They were very healthy until then. So, it sounds like your kitties will hopefully have many healthy years ahead of them. My oldest cat right now is 7 and he's in the prime of his life. I did have family up in New York that had a cat live into its mid 20s. IP: Logged |

Hi Jamiya, My 2 cats that I had to have put to sleep earlier this year each lived to be 17 & 18yrs old, which was very devistating after having them for so many years. The 18yr old lived a few months longer, and she was the mother cat of the 17yr old. They were inside/outside cats. We have a fenced in yard, which they never left... they mainly laid out in the sun on the porch. They were both very healthy up until the last few months they were alive. I have a friend that has a cat that is 20yrs old, so it's true... they can live very long and healthy lives. IP: Logged |

It really does vary between living condition and more importantly the breed of cat. My pure breed cats have lived 10% LONGER than their counter part the "pavement" cat. (mixed breeds) My last persian lived almost to 24, and my mothers two siamese are still alive and kicking at 24. My mixed breed cats (both indoor cats) only lived to 16 and 15. IP: Logged |

iluvpreemies - that's interesting about the pure breds. Would you have any idea why that is? IP: Logged |

Mine are the garden variety mixed kitties. Patches is gray and white and I got him within a week or two of moving here after I graduated from college. I was engaged but not married yet, so he was my first baby. I got Tesla, a calico (mentally challenged, I might add) 3 months later because I couldn't stand not having a kitten! My husband is not particularly fond of cats, so I have limited myself to two(except for the teeny one I brought home when pregnant with our second child that he made me bring back to the pet store). Sometimes it has been inconvenient to have cats. There was a period of time that they went virtually unnoticed, as babies filled up my time and marriage difficulties ate at my sanity. But the course of events over the years has brought me around to reaffirm the value of my pets and given me the ability to laugh at the difficulties they "cause" and regard it a challenge to find solutions. I love all my pets (2 cats, 1 puppy, 15 mice, and 1 short-tailed opossum - and 3 mice and 2 dogs which have passed over the bridge). I lost my dog unexpectedly this summer, and I have lived in fear ever since that I would lose others too early. Never take your pets for granted!!

I don't think that is true about pure breed's , people who only have pure breed's are snobs. My grandparents had a pure breed siamese that died at 16. It depends on the cat, and how they are treated. I just lost my baby last week she was about 16. She had a thyroid problem and was having a hard time breathing at the end. She was a rescue cat and I wouldn't have it any other way. My "mutts" are wonderful and I would never pay for an animal when there are so many that need homes who aren't pure breed. AS long as you take good care of your animals they should be fine for years to come. Make sure you go to the vet, so any problems that do come up, can be taken care of quickly. IP: Logged |

I had twin cat brothers. One lived to be 21 and the other is still alive. They are indoor(outdoor when we are home only)cats. They ate Science diet and I boiled fresh liver for them as treat treats. [This message has been edited by dj (edited 10-02-2003).] IP: Logged |

In the book of world records it states that the oldest cat lived to be 36 years old. Her name was Puss and she was from England. IP: Logged |

I have a 22 year old. She was a stray I took in, so she could be even older. None of my other cats have ever come close to that. IP: Logged |

My late grandmother had cats all her life. It was so darn much fun when I was little to go over to her house in the city and walk in to find a kitty just about everywhere you looked. She was so into her babies as she called them. And all the cats were so very well taken care of I do not remember the ages of the ones when I was little, but I know her last two kitties she had before her stroke were Samantha age 18, and Baby age 19. Samantha was put to sleep though about two weeks after grandmas death. I cant remember what happened, but it seems Samantha stopped eating and was basically wasting away. (missing grandma Baby followed exactly one month later. ~m~ IP: Logged |

Hello, My Cleo is 22. Science Diet as long as it has been available. Recently blood work shows 70% kidney function, hyperthyroid, not on any meds because thyroid meds may affect kidney function. She is eating as much protein as I can give her, steak, chicken beef. Heck at her age, 90 something cat years, I would let her take up smoking and drinking! It is so hard to know I will lose her maybe soon or near future. She was abandoned near our home and just became part of the family. My other cat Rusty, male, 15 years and dragging around, I can see he sleeps more, probably arthritic in the hips, good appetite, but aging much sooner than Cleo. If only they would live forever with us. IP: Logged |

The oldest my cat lived was 9, but he was lost for 2 1/2 years, and then found again! and he died of a heart attack, because after going 2 1/2 years without knowing what you were going to eat, he loved to eat it all! Our second cat was only a year old when someone ran over her, and our current cat is, wow! we haven't had her that long, it seems, but she is 4 or 5! IP: Logged |
