Hi Everyone..

I'm confused in whether I should amputate my kitty's tail. What happened is that my cat suffered a "traumatic tail injury" - as the vet said - at the tip of his tail, not the spine. I dunno what happened that day but somehow the hair on the end of his tail got ripped up including some skin (maybe?) and it was bleeding like crazy. I took him to the vet and the vet said I should amuptate the end of his tail to prevent the injury from spreading upward towards his spine. So far the "bone" of the tip of his tail has dried up and he seems to function pretty well. Besides, it's not exposing and it seems like nothing had ever happened. He can still move his tail like regularly. Should I go on ahead and follow the vet's suggestion? I'm having doubts because the vet that I go to never experience such a case where only the tip had been injured.
Any suggestions? Anyone knows approximately how much would a tail amputation procedure cost? I read somewhere it's about $500?!
Thanks in advance by me and my kitty.

I doubt your vet would recommend such a procedure without having good reason for it. Perhaps your kitty has nerve damage to the end of the tail which means that it cannot be felt, in this case having it amputated is imperitive because if the cat injures the tails again it will not know it is injured and could therefore bleed to death.

If you are worried about this get a second opinion from another vet asking them to explain fully why the procedure needs to be done. In the end these people didn't spent years in school for nothing
