Recently I have found several litters of kittens on our farm. Each time, they all seem to have really, really, really bad eyes. I mean, they are weeks old and their eyes obviously have never opened because they are so gooped shut. We open them and green stuff comes out. We have been putting some medicine in their eyes and as long as we do it three times a day, they clear up in about a week or so. But, why does this happen?! And if we find them after they are a month old and their eyes are like this, they end up dying despite our efforts. It breaks our heart. Does anyone know what causes this and what we can do? Is it heriditary? IP: Logged |

sounds like one of the cat flus to me. Do you get all your cats vaccinated? IP: Logged |

They are not vaccinated. Like I mentioned, I live on a very large farm and we have so many cats. People see our farm and drop their cats off all the time (without our knowing about it) — during the night, in the dead of winter, adult cats, sick cats, newborn kittens... we get it all. Luckily, though, we love cats and do not mind taking care of them. We figure it's better that they drop them off at our farm than at another farm where the people won't take care of them (or at our local shelter that is NOT no-kill). Anyway, my question is whether there is anything that can be done for these babies short of vaccinating all of the cats at the farm. I hate saying this, but there are just too many and many are also very wild. It's usually the same mothers who have kittens with this problem, however the mothers show no signs of being sick. I would really appreciate any help. All of these kitties mean the world to us. IP: Logged |

Hi how about talking to your vet about this and seeing if you can get a deal on mass de-sexing your wild population. You could humanly trap the feral cats and de-sex them (maybe vaccinate too) then rerelease on your farm. This would be a long term effort and continual but should decrease the amount of kittens, and take pressure off the wild cats and increase health. Over population is a real threat in wild cats, which decreases the number of prey avaliable and spreads disease. Your Vet might come to the party and make this much more possible economiclly. Also, look up some societys such as Cats Protection League which maybe able to help with the money for this process if you are willing to officially accept feral cats to live out their days on your land. Good luck IP: Logged |

Thank you very much for your advice. I will look into this and I'm sure be back to this site if I have any other questions. Just one thing, though, about the wild cats and not having enough prey. We buy cat food in bulk and it is put out daily in several locations to be sure all the cats are eating. And to see them, they sure are eating. They all have little round bellies Thank you, again! Moxy I don't know where you are in the world but with so many cats and such a kind nature in taking all these strays in you should be able to get financial help in getting them all neutered. By doing this not only are you going to have a lot less kitties but also cut down the risk of FIV among your rather large family of cats. I know in the Uk charities like Cats Protection League, The Blue Cross and RSPCA are always happy to help people who are so commited to rescuing cats and giving them a good home. Again not knowing where you are many cities have a petmobile that goes around at certain times who will neuter your cats for free. You would need to call your local animal shelter to get scheduling and location times of where you can meet them. IP: Logged |
