My flatmate and myself recently adopted a kitten from the animal welfare shelter and she is the most beautifully natured kitten ever!! Unfortunately she has not been toilet trained and we are running out of ideas - she's now peed on the couch, the carpet, beds ... just about everywhere she can find! We constantly clean the kitty litter, spray her with water and rub her nose in it if she has gone in the wrong place, we put her in her litter straight after eating ... we just don't know what else we can do ... can anyone give us any more suggestions??? Hi, Your kitten sounds a darling. How old is she? I wouldn't rub her nose in her mess, she won't understand this, nor would I spray her with water. These things can only make her anxious. Does she poo in the litter box? Just a thought, based on my own cat's experiences - have you tried changing the type of litter? If it's pebbly maybe try the shredded paper stuff. Also when she has weed somewhere, mop it up with bits of paper and put that in the litter box, so she can smell it. And if she poos there, maybe don't clean it out so often, so she can get used to the smell. Keep persevering, she's probably not quite settled in to your home yet and still feeling a little insecure. In time she'll get the hang of it. IP: Logged |

Don't rub her nose in her mess she will associate the smell with that place and use it more often. Do not shout at her either, if you manage to catch her 'mid-flow' then pick her up and put her in the litter. Be calm, you do not want her to start negative attention seeking. Make sure you leave serveral litter trays around and that you leave a small amount of soiled litter in the tray so she can smell it. It is quite unusual for a healthy cat to defaecate and urinate all over your house, maybe a trip to the vet to see if she has an underlying medical condition might be an idea good luck IP: Logged |
