First, I have to say I do like cats. I have only had one and she was wonderful. But now she is gone and I am kitty-less. Except...my neighors have about 20 cats..mostly ferral. They use my yard for their potty, lay on my deck IN the flower boxes and attack the birds that I find such fun to watch. I have talked to the owners and get almost no response..."Oh, do they bother you? I'm sorry. Isn't it a pretty day" I have tried to trap them in a Have-a heart trap to take them to the Humane Society, but they just won't get caught. The local police say there are no cat laws, the Humane society say if they are healthy (they are) there is nothing they can do. This is making me very angry and I know it isn't the cat's fault...what do they know about boundries? So my only other recourse is to repel them. Does anyone have any good ideas? Moth balls just don't work. Also my husband is very allergic to lots of smells and one product I tried sent him off in an asthma attack. I NEED HELP. Thanks Betsy IP: Logged |

If you can,a nice large dog will keep the cats away..Live traps also work well to,leave canned food at the end of the trap, leaving the cat no choice to go in the trap,if they want the food..I know this might sound rather gross. But,if you can,ask your understanding neighbors that have dogs if you may take their doggy poo..Place it in various spots around your yard..The sent of the dog, might keep the cats away..If all else fails..Start spraying the cats with the water hose..Sounds cruel? Nope,it's not..It's just water, and cats hate water..Good luck with the problem. IP: Logged |

Dear Betsy, Although I am empathetic regarding your concern for your yard and the birds that spend time there- I hope that you opt for the dog feces (which I, too, have heard repels animals) and light water spraying over trapping. As you mentioned before, these cats know no boundaries and they are ferral cats- what are they going to do with them at the humane shelter?? They're not exactly good candidates for someone who wants a cuddly housemate. Good Luck in finding a compromise and try to be patient with them- they're just living their life the only way they know how. -Carrie IP: Logged |
