Well, it has been forever since my last post. Dixie is now 5 months old and doing wonderfully. She was spayed last Friday and recovering well. I have to take her in to have her stiches removed in two weeks. Question: My vet removed all four of her dew claws, she said that it was best for her, any comments on this procedure? She seems uncomfortable with her leg incisions, and she is walking kind of funny. :(

I'm not certain about the amount it may hurt. She may be trying to avoid too much movement of the foot, causing her to walk funny.

Welcome back, MyDixie, nice to see you again!!!

As far as removing the dew claws, most vets don't remove them unless 1) There's a medical reason behind it, or 2) If the dog has dew claws on his/her back legs. Dew claws on the back legs are usually very loosely attached to the leg, and easily snag on things - not good, and quite dangerous. (Front dew claws, in the vast majority of dogs, have a solid attachment to the leg, thus being okay and generally don't cause any problems.)

Your pup walking kind of funny after having her dew claws removed is normal, as it's painful for a dog to walk (for obvious reasons) after the removal of the dew claws.

I can see why your vet removed Dixie's back dew claws, but did he/she say why they removed the fronts?

Lots of love to Dixie!!! :D
