Okay guys I need some serious encouragement here. Hubby and I rescued pity #1 who is ours, pity #2 which died 10 minutes after surgery, and now a 4.5 month old female pity with demodectic mange.

She found her way to us through a friend of a friend. A druggie thought he needed a pit bull, then she got sick and he was going to euthenize her tomorrow. Stupid us who have no funding for such things stepped up.

Does anyone have experience with this?? She's really not in horrible shape. Her face and head, paws, and tummy are pretty red. Theres only a few scaby areas and small pustules. Her lymph nodes are swollen. We're doing the amitraz dips, mitaban liquid, and antibiotics. $85 every couple weeks for dips and scrapings. $150 tonight. All on the credit card. Mind you with done about $3000 in the past 6 months.

Someone please have something positive to say before I freak out :-)

Jenny

I looked at a lot of sites that I came up with on google. They are interesting/helpful but it's always cool to hear from someone whos been there. My vet actually said, and many of the articles too, that this type of mange is generally not considered contagious. As long as the other dogs immune systems are good and healthy, plus they are adults, not pups. Thanks so much for the quick reply. I'm sitting here stressing myself out more and more on my night shift.

I found out that the guy kept her in a crate with a blanket over it most of the time. It's so sickening. The poor dog just cowered at our feet when we walked in. We were originally going to drop her off at a 24 hour animal hospital, but we couldn't do it. I guess there's worse things in life than helping every animal that comes across your path. Thats my only consolation.

I wish I could offer more help. I remember A long time ago we got a pound puppy that had Mange realy bad 15% of his body was covered.

The people at the pound told us it was just dry skinn and that the hair will grow back. When we took the pup to the vet for his check up & shots we found out it was Mange.

This was almost 20 yrs ago and the cure at that time and I dont remember what it was, was to expansive for us and we just could'nt swing it, so we had no other choice but to have the pup put down so I know how you feel.

Jenny: Bless you for being so compassionate! I've maxed out a couple of c.c. myself. Health care for pets is so incredibly high, now. It really makes my day when I hear of someone taking in deseving animals in need of love. The best of luck to you and your Hubby.

One more thing. Did your pup have any ticks? The reason I was asking is that you mentioned your pup had swollen lymph nodes. This could be from a condtion called Erlichiosis (tick fever). One of the symptoms are swollen l.n. It's really under-diagnosed and can be serious, too. Might ask your vet on your follow-up exam. Good Luck!

We found a pitt/ lab mixx, with horrible mange, NEarly her whole body was bare, bloody and scabby. We took her to the vet, to help, but oh man the expenses were outrageous!. The vet then took us aside, and told us that back in "the old days" they would put "burned" or used motor oil all over the affected area for a few hours, and then bathe really well. We took his advise and did this for two solid weeks, every day for two hours we wiped her down with the motor oil, and then bathed the crud out of her... Now she's the prettiest dog you've ever seen! We used a cone on her so she couldn't lick it and made sure she didn't get it in her eyes.... Its nasty and stinks, but it saved alot of $$$ and worked wonders... I don't know about a young pup though....and the oil must be cool! NOT HOT!

I have 2 pups that we're treating for Deomodex right now. Our vet offered us 2 options. Option #1: Mitaban dips. One every 2 weeks. $40 per dip. It normally takes 4-6 to cure the pup. Option #2: Ivormectin. It's used to deworm cattle. It's avaiable at Tractor Supply, Coop, or any farming store. It's $35 a bottle & you give it orally once a day. (the vet will have to dose it). It takes anywhere from one month to 3 months to cure the pup. The Mitaban dips didn't work for our pups. Instead they kept getting worse & lost most of their hair (atleast 90% of it). Ours have been on it for one month now, & since using the Ivormectin, the hair is growing back & they are looking tons better.....

By the way, one bottle of Ivormectin, has lasted me about a month, between 2 dogs, giving the dose that the vet told me to give... ($35 for a month for 2 pups, sure beats the heck out of $80, for 2 pups every 2 weeks for the dips).

Thanks for all of your great advice guys. She doesn't have any ticks, shes a very light tan with white so it's easy to examine her skin.I've heard about using cool motor oil as a dip. Theres a lot of mixed thoughts on it. I've heard it can cause some serious problems in some animals. I'm a little scared to try it on her. I did get some recipes for homeopathic stuff that I thought might be worth a try.

My thoughts are that maybe we'll do a couple dips, get her lymph nodes back to normal (everything I've read says this is common w/ generalized demodex) Maybe try the ivormectin, and herbal stuff. The vets are really great where we go, but it tends to be a little pricy since its 24 hours/7 days a week. I think I will call some of the other vets that I've worked with. Maybe they are cheaper on the dips.

She's doing really well with us. I think her life has been nothing but getting yelled at and thrown in her crate. She cowers so much, maybe she was hit. Dunno? She's a little nervous w/ our 70# (neutered) boy. He's so fascinated with her. Queen bee ms. mollie beagle is staring daggers at me.

hi jenny, i live in texas about 2 hours south of dallas and was wondering if your or anyone could tell me where the nearist pit rescue was here? this guy that lives behind me has 2 pits, the male is chained up an a logging chain in the front yard with a shabby little dog house thats almost to small, and the female has been pregnant like 4 times in the last year it seems like but i think she also has mange. she looks terrible, and at one point they were both starving, i feed the female several times as she came on my porch to tear my trash up, and went over and offered to give him dog food andhe showed me 2 50lb bags that he had. note: the female had a litter of pups living in their on poop on a crate! at that time and was nothing but skin, bone and boobs. and the male couldnt even get to his house cause his chain wouldnt reach! so i went home and called the sherrif and filed an animal abuse report and it took theam 3 days to get here and than they did nothing! he still has the dogs, he moved the dog house closer to the male!! but the female still is running around looking terrible. and needless to say the female is kacys mommy. any advice!!!!
