hey everyone as you know my kacy is a pit bull/ blue healer mix. when i got kacy i did alot of reading online when i first got her!! i read about training and stuff like that. i read on both breeds, more the pit bull, they both are supposed to be protective of family and home and kacy dosent desplay any of that!! she loves everyone she meets and hardly ever barks and never growls at anyone. she goes everywhere with me in the car and still loves on anyone who comes up to the car.she is a very smart and fast learning girley, i dont want her to loose that love for everyone cause its great but i would like for her to show more consern for her family. is there anything i can do or should i just not worrie about it and be glad i dont have an aggresssive pet considering i also have 3 small children!!??

I'm not sure where you read that APBT's are supposed to be protective, but from what I understand they are not. My boys don't ever growl or bark aggresivly at people, and they better not. It's not in the breeds nature. Know I am sure that if I was in a real bad situation my boys would help out, but they look to me as there leader. I should protect them. There have been people walking by my yard that I was unsure of, and they walked right up to them with a big smile on there face and wiggling there buts the whole way. Be glad, it sounds like you have a sound dog that don't need to warn of people with growls and barking. When a dog is confident they don't growl and bark, justice has never even growled at another dog, but he has wanted to fight plenny of times. He just pulls real hard toward the dog and sometimes cry's a little, well more like a wimper. He only does that with big dogs that challenge him. He was attacked by a little boston terrier, and he was real calm the whole time. He got a little anoyed but he was cool, he only gets aggresive if he sees a challenge. I know I talked about other stuff than your question but I get rambling sometimes and I can't help it.LOL

Hi kasey I also have a Pit/Blue heeler cross and he is GREAT! He is friendly to everyone he meets as well as other dogs and is turning into quite the hunting dog my husband has started training him with small game and birds and he is doing very well.
I also have a white APBT which is deaf and even with her disability is a superb dog she has not shown any aggression towards other people or animals she is only 6 months old however. I also have a blonde rednose Apbt which I just recently adopted she started out as a foster baby.
I have never really heard of APBT being naturally protective or people agressive dogs unless trained or bred to be.

I had a AB like that he was totaly worthless for protection. I think if someone was to brake into my home they could take him to with out any problem

Most pits are not suited for PP work for one reason or another.

However almost any dog could be trained as a threat dog or (Bark & Hold) Wich in truth is all most people need anyway.

I'm willing to bet your pup could do this. Work with her, Play tug game with her and perhaps make your self a Flert Pole wich will help build up her prey drive.

There are a lot of books and tape out on building prey & defence drive on dogs that are overly friendly or just to soft for your likeing I'll give you a link to where I get all my tape and books from.

Hope that helps some

Ok I raise Heelers, they can become very agressive during whelping, and overly protective. I doubt you have to worry about your kids, they seem to be drown to protect young children that they have been raised with. ITs the company and strangers you should worry about. My dogs are VERY protctive of us. We have to kennel them until they understand the these people are friends, not foes....

Thats a strange mix breed. I wouldn't worry about the pitt side, heelers are much more agressive biters than most other breeds.
Since she's not displaying that, its probably because she is young. She'll grow into it and you'll see the subtle changes. If push came to shove, I'm sure she'd protect yall.
But as in the pitts background, theya re lovers, not protectors, so thats probably where she's getting the "lovingness" from.

Heelers are very intellegent. You'll be amazed at the trainability. Good luck. Would love to see photos!

i have a few questions on kacys behavior.i will start with i have NEVER EVER EVER! hit kacy EVER( not even when she pees on the carpet, which she has started doing over the last couple of weeks) but ever since she was a little baby every time i walk up to her and reach out to pet her or lover her she cowers down like she had been beat.and i swear that i have NEVER hit her, not even a little smack on the but, nothing!!!! whats with that??? and the other question has to do with her peeing on the carpet, i have shampooed my carpet 4 times in the last 3 weeks. she did really good at house trainig but she just all of a sudden started peeing in the house. what do i do about that?

I tmay have something to do with her being pregnant? When you take her to the vet tomarrow you should ask him to check for a bladder infection as well just to be sure.

If she's pregnant, there is added pressure on her bladder and kidneys that create "leaking". You mentioned she got out, could it be that someone was trying to get her away, and slapped at her??? Just a thought. Heelers are very emotional animals. You'll learn that fast! Charllotte got a light spanking from Daddy for not listening and chasing the horses (could have been a BIG disaster, for those that have horses you know what I'm talking about!) ANy how, for two days she acted as if she was an abuse and neglect case. She just had her feelings hurt. But she hasn't even looked in their direction since.

She's probably moody, along with the added pressures, and hormonal changes goin on. Charllotte pooed on the carpet during her pregnancy alot, and she never did that before and now after....

Check with your vet though too, SHe could have UTI.

the only place she went when she got out was over to my mother in laws to play with their dog( its a female too) but they know how i am with kacy and wouldnt swat at her, i hope!!! i have learned with kacy that she knows when shes in trouble, like last night we got done with dinner, put all the left over food in the trash and than i wlked outside with my husband to halp plant some trees( that sound so corny!!!) but we planted trees in our front yard last night and when i came in i asked kacy "what are you doing baby?", i didnt see the trash yet, but as soon as i aske her what she was doing she cowered down and went to her bed. i was kinda confused untill i stepped in the soft taco that she got out of the trash!!! but all i have to do is look at her when shes in trouble and i swear it looks like she is gonna start crying!!! poor thing. i love her so much!!! i think ill go gt her now!!! lol!! but if i leave her in the house by herself, she will get my sons diapers and pull theam out of the pkg. and put theam in front of the front door. she wont chew theam just puts stuff in front of the door!!!
