Hi kasey, The heat cycle is usually 19days but can last 25-28days. A vet can palpatate her abdomen after 25days since the mating. There is also a blood test the vets can do to measure the amount of plasma protiens in the blood this can be done around 28-35days after mating. X-rays can be done 45-50days after mating which will show up any skeletons as up until 45days there is no skeleton structures of puppies. This method can tell you how many pups to expect. Pregnancy lasts 65days but some females give birth 58-61days. Since she is only 11months old If you decide to allow her to carry on the pregnancy then regular checks with the vet will need to be carried out to ensure she is in perfect health. I would advice on having the pregnancy terminated as she is not physicall or mentally mature enough to raise a litter but this is a decision to made by you and your vet. The complications of any dog giving birth is the risk of either illness to or death to the female or health problems or death with the litter if you would like more advice or help please feel free to email me and i will be pleased to help. quote: You are talking about the stupidity of OTHER dog owners yet you left a female IN HEAT outside. How smart is that???? Its like the #1 thing you don't do when your female is in heat. Sure other owners maybe irresponsible/stupid so you know this they don't alter their dogs and don't keep them tied up. Doesn't mean you should jump on the wagon with them, its your responsibility to protect your dog from others who are irresponsible. Thats in any situation. Lets say someone has an outside dog they keep tied. Someone else has a dog they let run loose, animal control won't pick the loose dog up or fine the owners. This loose dogs is intact and also aggressive and will eat other dogs food. The person with the outside dog has had to stop the other dog from attacking his a couple times and the loose dog is always eating his dogs food. Well even though he is being a pretty responsible owner and its the other guy who is the problem, he is going to take his responsibility one step further and protect his pet. He buys him a big kennel to keep the other dog from attacking his and to keep the other dog from eating his dogs food. So no matter what it is always a responsible owners place to make sure their pets are safe and protected even when it is the fault of someone else. You must have known prior to this that irresponsible people exist with their loose, intact males that could get in your yard or let your dog out. It does have to do with her being left out, if she was in this wouldn't happen and if she wasn't unattended I'm sure you wouldn't have stood their and watched her get out or the other dog dig her out. I've had several loose dogs come to my propery, its getting to where you can't even have your own yard uninvaded because of people who choose not to keep their dogs contained. This has been a problem for awhile, I'm sure you knew about. No one is saying you are the worse owner. But you didn't make the most responsible choice in this situation. Like the intact male you bred your female, well she wasn't spayed either or she wouldn't be pg now. [This message has been edited by True_Pits (edited 03-13-2004).] IP: Logged |

Geez. I think you need to lay off her for letting her dog out even though she was in heat. Of all the horrible things to do to a dog, that is not in the top 100. I let my dog outside when she is in heat. I have had no problems. Obviously kasey, if you know the other dog is coming into the yard then you should have done something about that. If your fence is secure then there is nothing wrong with leaving a dog outside in heat. IP: Logged |

"Obviously kasey, if you know the other dog is coming into the yard then you should have done something about that. If your fence is secure then there is nothing wrong with leaving a dog outside in heat." I agree with you. But also, in my opinion, if you do leave your dog out while in heat (unattended) then I think no matter what you should be prepared for any consequences of anything bad happening to your dog. i have a staffordshire bull terrier in heat at the moment and i have no problems with leaving her outside unattended. i have a secure fencing yard, and i have heard people say " i have seen a dog scale a 10 foot fence to get to a bitch in season" but i have also seen a male jump through a persons living room window to get to a bitch in season does this mean that any "responsible" owner should lock up their dog for a month with 24 hour survalence, i mean come on it was a mistake, why does everyone have to just jump down her throat about it. the deed is done just let it go and give her some advise she needs. also i thought the members of this forum wanted to attract people to join their forums, why is anyone gonna join and stay at this forum if everyone keeps abusing someone everytime they ask a question. Not everyone was born a dog expert like some of the people on this forum!! [This message has been edited by #1SBT (edited 03-13-2004).] IP: Logged |

quote: It's this type of thinking that gets dogs in trouble in the first place. Blaming "other owners". It's not just the stupidity of other dog owners. It's equally as irresponsible for the neighbors or whoever to allow (purposefully or accidentally) their INTACT dogs to get out - just as much as it is the fault of an owner leaving their female outside in heat. Dogs do not know boundaries. Regardless, like I said in a previous post, the deed has been done so now its time to educate, and all we can hope is that something is learned from all this. Hi i just need to add this i allow my females out in the yard unattended when in heat like someone else posted a male dog will jump through an open window to get to an in heat female and females will jump out to get to any males outside. But i guess me allowing my females in the yard in heat on there own is irresponsibel of me and i have 3females and 2 males and all live and sleep in the same house as me they also have free run of my house even when i am not in and i have 1 female that is in her 56th day of her pregnancy. Kasey came on here for advice and help not to be critisised or abused. Kasey hope things are ok with your little girl give her a belly rub from me. IP: Logged |
