Hello,
So I went to visit my father yesterday and his wife. (God she is dumb) Anyway, they have a chiuaua (sp?) and they always talk "dog" with me when I am there, even though they know nothing about dogs. So they proceed to tell me that in a couple of years they would like to start breeding dogs (retirement years) for a "hobby". They said they are going to get pure bred dogs (can't remember which dog, smaller dog though) and all the dogs will have papers ect.
So fine I said, lets see how much you really know about breeding. Well, I say you will have to wait a couple of years for the bitches to mature before you can breed them.
My father then proceeds to say "Can't you just breed on their first heat!!!!
OMG I almost hit the man, my dogs first heat was at 9 months (well that's when we got her and she went into heat right after). HELLO people I was soo mad. Then he tells me well if I sell the dogs for like $1200 each, how can I not make a profit off of it, even after all the vet bills ect.
Anyways, just wanted to give you some background, now my real question:
Where can I get real breeding info, I know somene on here breeds Shepherds - Charmedagain I think. Please help me! I know they said they were gonna wait a couple of years, but you don't understand the trailer trash wife he is with, she won't end up reserching it. LIke for ex: how many times should yo breed your bitch? Only once per year? They want to have 2 bitches and one male and just have breeding machines!!! These are the people I hate, and I find them in my own family, I can't believe it. All they had to say to me after I told them some of the responsibilities of breeding (having to take puppies back if the homes dont work) is that its not like we're breeding Pit Bulls like you have,(just own, I don't breed) these are dogs people are going to want forever! What morons, I would rather have a large dog (any breed) than a dog that is prone to mouthiness and nipping. ARGH! I was so dumbfounded, I just left. Anyways, please post lots of info, or if you have files you want to send me, please send them to: leslie146@hotmail.com. Thanks guys!
I appreciate anything you can give me.
Leslie

That's really crazy if you think his dumb wife won't research it i would do it for her and give the printed info i got on breeding and give it to your father and his wife and make them rea it in front of you and see if they follow what the papers say. omg i'm sorry but i'm mad dat yo pops said can't you breed the bitches after there first heat dats crazy. i'm not that much of an expert but my moms is kind of byb in a way and she decided to breed our dog nena after her 8th heat when she reached maturity. She only bred nena when she knew that alot of responsible owners wanted a purebred blue brindle pup and we have her husband nino they are both blues and it took us almost a year to match nena with a good stud because i made my mother research it because she was just about to just breed nena wit any dog and i waz like no yo ain't we are going to match her up with the right hubby as we like to call him.

bullylove, you may want to try looking into your local by-laws....reason why is b/c while most areas don't have anything that applies to breeders, almost all areas have something that says how many dogs you can have....how this will help - well even though they only plan on having 3 dogs, usually puppies count too. For example, in my area 3 dogs are ok by the by law so unless you only have the bitch on site and can guarantee that she is only going to have 2 pupps, you are in violation of the by law. Ticket for every dog over 3, and ticket for any of 3 without a license. Usually with most backyard breeders and puppies you can get them for unsanitary conditions and noise as well. Maybe if you have similar by laws where you live it might discourage them from breeding just for the trouble of it.
Where I live we do eventually find out about all the byb by complaints for smell or noise or by checking the classifieds. I guess what I've learned that while some of the byb just re locate or laugh at me as soon as I'm out the door, most of them just can't be bothered with all the trouble and quit. I'm not suggesting you call animal control on them, but maybe just the idea of all the potential fines and irritation by animal control will encourage them to find another 'hobby'.

THey sound so stupid on breeding. I feel so bad for you but I know how it is. Same thing with my family.

I mean look at this http://www.petfinder.com/pet.cgi

316 chis oh yes but they are dogs people want forever, thats why there are so many Chi and Chi mixes in the shelter along with other small dogs. And 316 is just for ONE STATE and thats only the ones from shelters that list on petfinder. There are probably 1000s of unwanted chis.
