O.K I hope noone jumps on me for this one but here goes. My darling hubby has always wanted a Pit bull so I decided to get him one for his birthday. She is awesome!!! I have never owned a dog quite like her but I realize now that I was a bit impulsive in buying a dog breed I knew nothing about and I am trying my hardest to educate myself. First, I didn't know that there were people that are trying to outlaw this breed in Louisiana (where I live) How will this effect me? My hubby would be upset if he had to give up his baby as he is already attached to her after only 1 week. She is an indoor pet but we like to spend a lot of time with her outdoors and it is amazing how ignorant some people can be. She is only 9 weeks old and people act afraid of her. I can't tell you how many comments I have heard that start with " Do you know how dangerous those dogs are?" People just don't get it do they? Bad owners make bad dogs! I have a female dog with barely a drop of Chow Chow in her that was WAY meaner at 9 weeks than this dog could ever be and although she is still protective of us, she has never bitten anyone and would never harm a kid. Does everyone that owns a Pit go through this or are people in Louisiana particularly ignorant? Next, how harmful is it that my hubby lets her sleep with us? I think this is a big mistake because she will be a rather large dog and although I don't mind her being in there sometimes, I wouldn't want her sleeping with us every night. She has a kennel but his heart breaks when she cries. I think I'm right by saying she should learn to sleep in her kennel now (while "potty" training) so it won't be as hard to get her to sleep in her own bed. I know I wasn't very responsible in getting a dog I knew nothing about to be our first "indoor" dog but I am ready and willing to learn anything I can about this breed and any reply and advice would be greatly appreciated (and needed). Thanks! IP: Logged |

First off, i wouldnt let your new pup sleep with you. From what i gather, Pits have to know that you are the alpha, and they are not equal to you. This will be important as you train her. You should also be socializing her with various friendly dogs and people so she knows how to react. Im sure others will chime in with some other good suggestions. Oh, and raise her right, and you can prove those people wrong in regards to her being "vicious". Good luck IP: Logged |

I THINK its not just people in Louisiana...but probably that Louisiana gets a lot more of bad publicity about Pit Bulls than any other state... Does anyone else think this? IP: Logged |

Well First off, never let her sleep with ya'll cause she will want to do every chance she gets. And she'll test your limits about the bed. We let our little girl sleep with us before we made her an outside dog, and everytime we let her in the house she goes right for the bed. And no its not just ppl from Louisianna that say bad things about Pits. I live in Tx, 5 miles from the La. line, and everyone is like Pits are visious and will turn on you no matter how you raise them, well the ppl who are anit-APBT IP: Logged |

Don't let her sleep with you unless you want her with you EVERYNIGHT and hogging the bed too! My girl is the biggest bed hog on a queen sized water bed and I'm falling off! The more I scoot the more she does! And burrows into my back. If you did decided that this is for you, this still isn't the right time to be doing so. Not at this stage. You are right about her needing to be crate trained and it helps with potty training. It will also be better down the road. Like when no one is home or if you have to travel, ect. IP: Logged |

I keep Shianne in the kennel when I am not home so that she doesn't eat anything. I don't want anything to harm her. She doesn't mind it though. If we are anywhere in the house and I tell her "Go in your room" she goes right to my room and if I tell her "Get in your bed" she goes right to the room where her kennel is and gets right in the kennel. The only thing that bothers me about her being in it is that there is no cushion for her. I try to put things in there for her to lay on but she eats everything. IP: Logged |
